What kind of infection?
Alright so, I made a post a while ago about a shepherd that was being neglected. After much fighting in the house after she found out I made the post, she stepped it up a bit and let me bathe her and get her nails done, and clean her ears. Dog can actually walk now, which is good. However, her skin problems seem to be getting worse. There is an infection on a good part of her body. I think its a yeast problem, but I'm not sure because I've never seen it before. The idea comes just from the research that I'm doing. Today though she was exhibiting signs of having a UTI which she has had before, so we gave her one of the pills that were given to her owner by the vet for her first one, and when giving it to her noticed how horrible her infection had gotten. I've posted pictures of her neck where its the worst, and her stomach where its black skinned and usually nasty like her neck, but since she's always inside laying down is usually rubbed off. Any ideas on what it could be or how to help it at home would be greatly appreciated.
Good Lord! First thing I'd do is remove the collar.
Get that collar off for sure.
Try bathing with a soothing oatmeal shampoo and see if that helps some.
But if it is a real infection you may need some antibiotics to get ahead of this. Or is it because of food allergies? Or contact allergies (allergic to bedding?).
No chance of getting the dog to the vet?
vet consult for allergies. the black skin in groin is typical of longstanding yeast and infection. skin turns black due to increased pigment from the irritation.
that collar, get it off, shave the area, wash with antibacterial such as phisohex or phisoderm, anything with chlorhexadine in it. If not chlorhexadine (feed stores have it in gallon containers) then get iodine surgical scrub and use that like a shampoo.
the skin is the largest organ in the body and it must be healthy or the dog can get extremely ill and have no way to fight off infections. it's probably staph or strep, doesn't matter, just get it cleared up!
be aware dog may scratch and reinfect itself
Why isn't your BF dealing with his grandmother?
Take the dog for a "walk" you had to go into a store. You tied up outside, only gone a minute when you returned the dog was gone. That's what you tell gramma.
This dog needs care, care you do not seem to afford, nor does granny care to do.
She should be up on animal cruelty charges or failure to provide or the like.
Unfortunately I am not allowed to take the dog out of the house. No one has ever even considered it but me. And the dog is micro chipped to her. And if I get her in trouble with the police or animal control, my three dogs and I lose our current home. In about a month I'm moving into a new place. At that point I'm pretty much planning to tell her she either gives me the dog to properly care for or surrenders it to the shelter herself. I have a case against her.
She has no money to take her to the vet, and I don't either. My vet bills are being handled through my family vet that weve been seeing for years (they kind of just put it on a tab that my mother and I have that weve been paying off).
We took off the collar, gave her some amoxacillin (sp?) that she had before for a UTI, and set her up a bed to lay down on instead of the floor. Also gave her some yogurt to hopefully help with the yeast.
I don't have any money (all my food and such is bought at Sam's on my moms business credit account) to buy the medicated shampoos and rinses. Anything thats semi cheap or can be used at home I can probably get my hands on. We live down the street from a feed store so I can walk up and check how much stuff is there.
I'll have to check and see how it looks when she wakes up. She's locked in grandmas room at night.
amox won't help
wash and keep it clean and dry
it is oozing pus so i don't think this can wait
