Default Dog Spaying Advice

Hi,

I have read all the resources related to spaying benefits and disadvantages. And I would like to hear from actual German Shepherd owners. I have a 10 months old GSD, she just had her first heat. I am a bit scared about mammary cancer, so if there are owners who had female German Shepherds and had them spayed, please let me know the age and also if the dog had any mammary cancer.

Everybody has different opinions, vets, breeders, researchers. But I want to hear real stories.

Thank you in advance.

I have had 3 females. All were spayed. My first at 1 year. My second at 2 years, my third at 2 years. None have developed mammary cancer. One passed at 16 years old, one is currently 10, and one is 5.

I had one spayed under 1 yo that blew both CCLs & died of hemangio.

I had another spayed under 1 yo that did OK. Died at nearly 15.

Pup is intact, 4 yo is intact.

No mammary cancer yet.

All of my female dogs have been spayed. They were all spayed before their first heat. No mammary cancer and none had issues from spaying early. All lived to be old and crotchety except for one that died from a tick illness (had nothing to do with being spayed)

No problem with my girl. She was spayed before she turned a year old.

Yes everyone has different opinions.

Here is my story - I have always had GSD girls rather than males, always had them spayed around 6 to 7 months. I have not had a GSD girl with mammary cancer. They have lived to around 9 to 11 years and my current girl is 5yo.

You do what you are comfortable with.

Every female I've owned has been spayed at 6 months - no mammary cancer - my current GSD was spayed laparoscopically - I would highly recommend going that route if you can afford it. Her incision was only 1/4 inch, came home the same day - only her ovaries were removed.

There were studies done on guldens in terms of mammary cancer and reality is that incidence increase overall but when you take into consideration general incidents of this type of cancers, it is still small increase and waiting till they are mature has some other benefits. I am waiting with my GS till after second heat (she is now 13 months) as there are many other benefits. My other dog is 13 y old retriever female and we have adopted her at 2 yo, she was spayed at early age (months) and now I see issue related to that; we had very hard time to keep her weight under control, she has some tumors and overall, shows many problems related to early spaying, she is great dog anyway but it is so sad to see her slowing due to issues. Looking at that we have decided to wait with the procedure until gs puppy is fully grown.
