Hallucinations?!?!

My 1 1/2 year old male German Shepherd is acting strange. He acts like he is seeing things that are not there. He's acting like he's scared of his own shadow or something like he's paranoid. I don't know. I can't even get his attention half the time because he keeps looking around and is fidgety kind of. He's never done this before.

Neighbors dog did this when he got into mushrooms in the woods. I would get to an emergency vet right away.

have his eyes checked. He could be SEEING shadows

It could also be an ear infection.

do you have any recreational drugs in the house? (don't have to answer) that the dog may have gotten in to .
this was on a radio show with a vet behaviourist talking about a dog that had every test imaginable without discovering cause. When the house was thoroughly searched for mold or toxins - a teeny stash was discovered in the teens bedroom , which the dog had gotten in to.
Dog perfectly fine .

True on the recreational drug possibility. Had a friend who left her dog with another friend for the weekend. Came back and his balance was all screwed up. Went to vet for tests, $1000, until the dog sitter fessed up that the dog had eaten a whole bag of pot cinnamon rolls.

Could possibly be seizure activity. Hard to know for sure. Maybe time for a vet visit.

I don't have any kinds of drugs in my house. And I don't think he got ahold of any plants outside because the ground is covered with a foot of snow. If it was a seizure how long does it normally last?

Could he have gotten into anything kept under the sink (cleaning stuff, etc)? It's hard to tell with seizures, if that is the case. I'd get him to the vet ASAP- get eyes, ears, etc checked to rule things out. Watch him closely- keep a log of his behaviors to see if there's any sort of pattern.

To add to your list of possibilities - does it include sensitivity to light? There was a fungus found in dog food a few years back that affected dogs similarly if I remember right.
