Default Female in heat....what about the boy?

Karly is definitely in heat. She is swollen and a small amount of blood. Briggs is 9 months old and seems to have no interest, thankfully. Is this normal? Can I expect his lack of interest to last her entire heat cycle? I feel like we are in the clear but I am not taking any chances and they are not left alone together. I guess I just expected him to act like a crazy man once she started her cycle. So far neither of them are acting any different. I have never had an intact male dog so not too sure what to expect.

Oh, he'll notice. And then that will be all he can focus on....

I'm pretty sure he's noticed something. He does sniff her but he doesn't seem to care or have any reaction. I'm hoping he just doesn't understand what's going on. Can I get that lucky?

It's going to be like all of a sudden the light bulb goes off and he is going to lose his mind....then everyone in the house will lose theirs.

Oh.....dang. What am I watching for exactly? I've never seen a male react to a female in heat so I am truly clueless. I think the best thing for me since I have no idea is to completely separate them.

This is your best bet, for sure.

No doubt, totally separate them. Even though he is a puppy and his first attempts at mating will reflect he is clueless, Mother Nature will step in and help him put things in order.

If you can separate them now, you might be able to sleep at night. When his little mind realizes what he has in front of him, he's going to let the entire neighborhood know how unfair it is that you've taken away his girl friend.

Also, once she is in full swing, she might declare her love for him and you'll have two letting the neighborhood know how unfair life is.

The male will show interest once the female is in standing heat..maybe 10 days or so into her cycle. But you can't predict when it will be, so your best bet is to separate them until its over.
