Exclamation Hot Spot-Need a reply ASAP!

Harley has what looks like either a hot spot or ringworm on his right cheek (approximately the size of a quarter). It hurts him when I try to clean it and it's bloody. Should I take him to the vet, or can I clean it regularly and hope for it to go away?

We got one last week and fixed it in 2 days, now its healing. Petsmart has a hotspot antimicrobial, its blue and thick in clear bottle. Also we use veteracyn to clean several times a day. You can go to the vet or you can give him a days with home remedy and see if it's better. Hot spots are very common so I feel like its a good idea to learn how to treat them.

also the vet will probably give you the same stuff as over the counter and only in sever cases they prescribe antibiotic, mostly for secondery infection.

Unless you're sure it's a hot spot and not something else, I'd take him to the vet. I've only experienced two hot spots before and neither of them bled, although they did look pretty raw.

Moses had one on his face the size of a quarter and overnight it exploded in growth. See pics in this old thread: Facial Hot Spot (graphic pics)

He hasn't had one since. I keep vetericyn on hand for wounds including hotspots.

ok that looks way scarier than the one we are dealing with on Z's back. How long did this take to heal?

Thank you both for the quick replies. I'd like to try and treat it myself to save money, but then again, I don't want to make it worse by doing the wrong thing if it's not a hot spot.

This is what we used + gently sprayed veteracyn to clean

Sentry HC Hot Spot Skin Remedy for Dogs - Sale - Dog - PetSmart

My husband is a pharmacist and likes what these two remedies cover/kill/treat. I am clueless =)

I honestly don't recall, that was several years ago. I don't think it was long though. I keep neosporin powder (from vet) on hand now for ER wound treatment. It dried it out pretty quickly. From re-reading the thread the top half was improving the next day. THey had to save the side of his face to treat it. He probably got a steriod shot as well. It's not uncommon for them to go from dime size to huge in a matter of hours.

My goodness! Poor dog. Harley has had a hot spot for about 4 days. I didn't notice it at first, because it just looked like matted fur. Then I started to notice the hair loss.
