Default Lillie has HGE

I saw the November thread, and got some info from that but
choose not to bump it for obvious reasons. I guess I don't
really need any help, maybe some kind words?

I'm trying to stay positive and not freak out, but after a 61
year lifetime of experience with all types of dogs, my third
GSD is the third one to present with something I've never
encountered before.

So far we're about $675 into it, w x-rays for possible foreign
bodies (due to a Christmas ornament/straight pin incident in
December, and me worrying one might have been missed back
then) a Parvo test for Mom's peace of mind, fluids and meds
and egads!

Seeing bloody vomit Tuesday morning and then two bouts of
bloody diarrhea yesterday is really, really worrisome. But
Lillie is helping ease my mind some, has a gangbusters appetite
(hey mom, this chicken and rice stuff is GREAT!) and enough
energy still for squeaky toys and tormenting her little kitty
brother.

All her blood work and pancreas test results are A-OK, too.

Anyway, thanks for reading!

I'd say pretty bright red. (Saw someone said 'raspberry jelly', like that.
And really foul odor, the diarrhea anyway. And foul smelling gas, though
that has lessened over time, haven't noticed any so far today.

Sorry, it's hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Nasty stuff.

My 12.5 yr old Aussie had two bouts of this at about $1000 a piece. We did all the testing and HGE was the final proclamation. They get dehydrated very quickly that is why it got so costly. His system settled nicely with metronzadole and bland meals. Anytime I took him off he started having problems again. This is not ideal for the young dog I know but he has been on Tylan Powder for 10 months now and no problems at all. I decided to keep him on it the rest of his life. He is not doing very well and another intense bout of the HGE would be too hard on him.

FYI Tylan powder is an antibiotic used in the chicken industry and is available without prescription. I know, not ideal but it is working well in this case.
