8 week old German Shepherd loose stool
Hey Guys,

I just got this puppy like 5 days ago and he is 8 weeks old and I noticed he was on Purina Puppy chow and i heard that dog food is crap and he was having lose stool and it was pretty persist for a few days so i switched his food to Nutro Lamb and rice. I know i should't have switched his food so quickly but his stool was lose on both foods so i didn't really think nothing of it so i took him to the vet. He got his stool tested and no parasites or worms so they sent me home with some medicine and some Hills i\d bland diet food and told me to feed him in small portions and so i did the medicine and food and he improved for a day so i mixed a little Nutro back into his food with the I\D food and he is now having lose stools(no blood). His energy is fine and appetite. Im not sure if i moved to fast with the normal food or what to do. Can i get some advice please?

never had success with nutro dog food, caused loose stool. make sure your pup has plenty of water so he doesn't dehydrate due to loose stool.

Thanks. Do you have any food suggestions?

There are several threads on kibbles people have had success with (not everyone of course) in the Feeding Our Puppy Forum. My 12 week old is doing well on Royal Canin Puppy right now. Some of the other popular choices are Taste of The Wild and Orijjen. Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy is high quality but commonly causes soft poos. You may have to try several. Remember to switch gradually! :) Sometimes a spoonful of PURE pumpkin fed with a meal or two can firm up stools, if the soft poo persists its time for a change in kibble.

I just switched my 4 month old off Blue Buffalo because it had been giving him loose stool for weeks. We just put him on Nature's Recipe Grain-Free Salmon. He really likes it and after adding a probiotic, after only 2 days it seems his stool is starting to harden up. So whatever you try, think of adding a probiotic (I use the GNC SuperMega Probiotic) to help his digestive enzymes build up and stay consistent.

Teaspoon pure pumpkin and digestive enzymes really helped my puppy. He's 11 weeks. He also had coccidia. He is on Albon for 2 weeks to clear it up. I would take another stool sample to vet. My vet didn't catch it until the 2nd stool sample. I feed Fromm LBP now.

We had a terrible time with our pup. All tests etc were neg at vet, tried pumpkin, boiled chicken rice, Blue Buffalo & Orijen etc. Long story short Purina Proplan for Sensitive Skin & Stomach did wonders!!!! Can't recommend enough. After 2months of vet visits, food trials and lots of aggravation this was like magic! Raw hide treats are bad for bellies and watch treats until settled. Worth a shot. So glad it was suggested to me.

so sorry but all purina foods are less than optimal quality, maybe the proplan the least so. although i KNOW some people do not have problems, it's just not a high quality food.

years ago, cash's breeder turned me on to breeder's choice pinnacle (trout & sweet potato in particular). i have been very happy with this food for my personal dogs. but where i was really impressed was when doing rehab with rescues. it was really quite amazing.

lots of different foods and lots of different opinions on what's the best to feed. if you're gonna do kibble, you should check out this food. imho.

there was a time when purina was considered a good food and dogs did well on this. no matter what food is chosen and regardless of price, some dogs will not do well on certain foods. op, some on here have had success with diamond foods from tractor trailer might have to do the trial and error routine to find a kibble that agrees with your dog.

A couple of things:
Check for Giardia and Coccidia - done via a stool sample.
Feed small portions of chicken and rice several times per day until stools shape up
SLOWLY reintroduce kibble - a handful at a time mixed with the chicken and rice
Purina AD kibble is a good one to start with, then I would go with a limited diet kibble like Natural Balance or California Natural.
Good luck.
