Default Advice for giving liquid ivermectin to gsd for heartworm preventative medicine?

Just looking on some real input from GSD owners. Have you ever tried to use the liquid ivermectin as a heartworm preventative? If so, does it work well, and have you noticed any side effects? I have done some research, but some sites say it may be dangerous for Gsd's. Others say the opposite, I am considering because of the price difference. Also, i think it is ridiculous that you have to have a prescription to buy the heartworm tablets. Thanks! any information about it would also be greatly appreciated

I think the OP is talking about liquid ivermectin such as Ivomec brand. There are two issues to be concerned about. First, some dogs have a gene mutation in the MDR1 gene. You can have your dog tested for this issue. Second, it is tricky to get the dose right. If you are using the 1 percent ivermectin solution, the dose is a small fraction of a ml. I don't remember exactly how much. However, if your dog doesn't have the MDR1 mutation, giving a little more than is found in Heartgard shouldn't be a problem. If I were going to do it, I would give 0.1 ml (once a month) of the 1 percent solution, which is more than the Heartgard dose, but safe.

I had a dog on 0.6 ml daily for demodex mange and she had no side effects.

Alot of mushers here buy the Sheep Drench liquid Ivermectin but it needs to be cut to dose properly.

OP - Check out page three of this post where Marbury and I were arguing over the correct dose:

Any recommendations for online purchase of Heartgard plus?

Saphire is correct; it has to be diluted properly. The Sheep Drench she mentioned is similar to the cattle and swine version I used. I bought it at Tractor Supply, but I see it is also available on Amazon.

Our pup is currently on 0.6 ml once per day for mange. Derm vet said to be very careful what we use for flea control while he is taking. NO Comfortis, Triflexis or Advantage MULTI....regular Advantage or Frontline is ok. We use Revolution and can NOT use that right now either.

I used Ivermectin injectable on my GSDs, hunting beagles and other dogs for years with no issues for monthly HW protection. 0.1ml/10# body weight. I just pull up the dose and then unscrew the needle and squirt it in their mouths. Its such a small amount of liquid the dogs didnt really care. A bottle goes a long way.

I use the 1% injectible cattle solution (given orally, I have a bag of frozen franks, cut a slit, and inject it). I try to dose carefully, most people are dosing really high (.1cc per 10# is more than 16x the dose in a Heartgard tablet) but there's a huge range of dosing so as long as the dog is not MDR-1 deficient, it is safe. I give my 70lb dogs about .25cc. A $35 bottle with a 3 year expiration will expire before I use it all on 3-4 dogs.
