At 3 1/2 month and with allergies?
We adopted Tank from a neighbor who could not take care of him. I want to share his story and maybe you can understand better. I know there are many post about allergies, but they are all different and what might be for one, might not for the other.
Tank was given to my neighbor at 5 weeks old. She put him on Royal Cannin at first. He was an inside dog for 2 weeks and then moved to the backyard with the other dog. At some point when they ran out of the puppy food they started giving him the same cheap adult dog they were giving the other dog.
After about a month an a half she brought him over asking me if we wanted him ( they knew we were not happy on the way they were doing this pup) Tank was extremely skinny, infested with fleas with red bumps all over his belly, thinning hair in some areas with scabs and a never ending itch. This was really a totally different puppy than the chubby hairball they have gotten two an a half month before.
I took him to the vet. He send deworming meds, antibiotics for the skin infection, (he thought it was flea allergies) and Benadryl for the itch. The skin samples did not show to be mange.
I started him on Science Diet, but later change to Natural Balance L.I.D thinking on food allergies.
We went for his follow up and while he did not have the red bumps he was itching constantly and still had the scabs and hair thinning.
It's been two weeks and he is scratching and itching like the first day. I just notice his red bumps are coming back. His stool is soft as well.
I am thinking of food allergies. Can it had been triggered because of the way he was introduced to dry food? One day he was nursing, the next he was given dry food, later changed about 3 different times in 2 months.
When I asked my vet this question he said that allergies did not usually showed up until after 4 months, so he did not think it is food allergies.
At this point I just feel so bad for this pup that just had a rough start in life. It brakes my heart to see him itch in such a way. I am at the end of the food bag and I do not know if to go and buy the same one or try another brand. Yesterday he left a bit if his food, which I though as odd because he eats as if it was his last time doing so.
All your comments are greatly appreciated.
Note that besides everything else he is doing well and behaving as a normal puppy. Plenty of energy and goofiness. He is so clumsy! 😊
