Best Way to Feed a Previously Malnourished GSD?
Just wanted some feedback from you all before I make a plan...
I recently rescued a GSD. He's been here just over three weeks, and he's absolutely awesome.
However, I notice that he has odd poops.
A little backstory, from what I was told... Breeder sold him to a family who chained him in the yard for the first year of his life. Breeder found out about it, showed up and he was covered in mange and severely malnourished. Surrendered him to a vet clinic where he lived for six months getting back on track, then went to the rescue for a couple of weeks until I showed up.
He's now about 18 months, and I'm wondering if the malnourishment he suffered during that whole first year is going to be an ongoing problem (and, if so, how best to feed him to compensate as well as I can) or if this is a separate digestive issue.
It's usually normal to begin, then finishes as diarrhea. Normal color, etc. He is slightly underweight as well, despite eating the same as my other 100 lb GSD who is the same age.
I've held off making too many changes up front, as I know he's in a new home and it's a new routine, etc. but now I need to see if it's cause for concern or just something needing better management.
Has anyone ever heard of anything like this?
Has he been tested for EPI?
