Was playing with Einstein this morning when he slipped and started limping. Checked and looked as though the nail ripped from the meat and is now hanging next to the meat of the dew claw.
What should I do? Is a vet visit necessary? Will it heal on its own? I attached two pictures of it. Any advice will be much appreciated!!!!!
The vet may want to pull off the rest of the hanging nail which they can do with some sedation if its really painful. Then they should clean it and might wrap it up for a little while. My Beagle just did this over the summer and after we pulled the toenail it healed in a matter of days. If we hadn't pulled it, she probably would've snagged it on something and re injured it. The nail grew back fine now though!
Ouch! I agree with the last comment. Visit the vet to remove it and clean it up. They may recommend removing the dew claw on the other paw if it's likely to snag. You don't want a repeat of this incident. Hope your gsd is feeling better soon!
Thanks everyone, we just got back from the vet. He cut the nail off but left the dew claw, bandaged him up and gave a round of antibiotics. He said the meat is intact so a new nail will grow back very quickly. So Einstein is feeling better.
On another note, I never heard him scream so bad It's a painful area I'm sure, but when he was cutting the nail off poor tines (nickname) screamed so hard it broke my heart
But, of course we visited petco afterwards and got a new toy hehe
Here he is back home feeling better with his new Orbee
I'm glad you would have, and I am just such a ****ty owner that I took the 5 minutes to ask around before rushing him to the vet. I guess we can't all be great like you!
