Trifexis problems

I've been giving my 10 month old GSD Trifexis for about three months since he finished his vaccines and vet administered heart worm meds. I just realized today he's most likely throw up at least the last two doses. I'm concerned what risk 2-3 months without proper heart worm prevention poses. I have an appointment with the vet in the morning but since I'm at work until then I have plenty of time to worry about it. I figure ill have a heart worm test, switch to something topical, and hope for the best. Anyone have experience with the subject? How worried do I need to be?

Just switch to something else. Your vet can make recommendations for alternatives.

Ar you giving the Trifexis on an empty stomach or with food? I know with Comfortis you have to give it with food and I just checked the Trifexis website and they also recommend giving it with food. GOOD LUCK!!!

Heartworm test will be negative. It takes 6 mo for a test to show a true positive. See if they'll do a quick direct (look at a drop of blood under the scope to check for microfilaria). I'd say swap to Comfortis and Heartgard, if Comfortis gives your pup's tummy trouble when given on a full stomach Sentinel is another option. Different active ingredient, but it'll keep you out of the topicals.

Vet trip done. We talked and decided he didn't need any test and I didn't have to pay for the trip. Vet tech said manufacturer claims if they keep down the Trifexis for at least an hour they will absorb the medicine. I gave with food and he vomited after about 3-4 hours of fighting it back. Sounds like lots of GSD don't tolerate it very well. Switched to heart guard and will see how that goes. He seems to tolerate it much better so far.

Sorry your guy isn't doing well on it. Have you tried giving it with food plus giving half at a time? We do morning and night with food. Good luck.
