DermaPet" Benzoyl Peroxide plus shampoo
Has anyone had any experience with this shampoo (DermaPet" Benzoyl Peroxide plus shampoo) in assisting in the management of demodectic mange? I have a 5 month old puppy who is currently being treated with oral Ivermectin. I did have him tested for the MDR1 gene before starting theory and his results came back Normal/Normal. He went thru about 3 Mitaban dips but after the last dip he was very lethargic and since most of the spots are around his face and eyes the vet and I both agreed to go the Ivermectin route. I know this can take a long time before you start seeing positive results. He is scratching and chewing quite a bit so looking for something to help without going down the antibiotic road as he has already went thru two courses of simplicef. He has no bleeding or visible sores I think it is probably staph or mange related causing the itch. I am also supplementing him with Dr's Foster and Smith Premium PlusŪ Omega-3 Gel Chews and only natural pet immune strengthener.
I obviously can't see your dog but am wondering if he has a secondary staph infection that is causing some of the scratching and chewing - where he might benefit from antibiotic again? I know it stinks to have a dog on abx so much - but his immune system is not currently doing the job, or he wouldn't have mange.
I think if I were looking for a shampoo it might be something soothing - to me - and this is just feeling not based in fact so it's worth a little more than nothing - but peroxide seems like it would be irritating. I know they use it sometimes to oxygenate the skin or something like that, but I would ask my vet if I could use something simple like an Earthbath type shampoo, oatmeal based, etc.
Also - I have used DMG liquid, from VetriScience, to help dogs after surgeries, infections, etc, and I don't know if it helps my mind, or helps the dog, but in my mind it helps the dog!
Another thing would be probiotics mid-day. Hopefully the immune strengthener is helping - man, you just want the dog's system to kick in and not get reliant on these things!!!!! Is that so much to ask!
