bad diarrhea in my dog after treat
My dog had diarrhea starting last night a few hours after I gave her some chicken jerky treat I got at Trader joe's. Funny thing I never buy that stuff from petco cause they smell like they're caked in chemicals but this one seemed to be odorless and had a premium from trader joe's. Any way, she had the run last night and I've been taking her outside every 1 or 2 hours and she will have the squirts. At this point it's just pure liquid, no substance. Sometimes she will go and then she will walk around and try to go again and nothing will come out. She's been outside maybe 7 times today.
She's also been munching on grass and I heard dogs do that when their stomachs aren't right. And because of that she threw up this morning just yellow bile stuff.
She's not lethargic and she's excited to still go outside and probably would chase the ball if I threw it (I didn't, want to take it easy until she recovers). She also ate cooked chicken breast (no seasoning, plain, steamed) so she does have some appetite.
It's 7 pm here in Cali and I dont think it requires a vet visit unless it doesn't go away tomorrow or she gets worse.
I'm kind of getting paranoid cause I just read that a lot of these chicken jerky treats come from China and a lot of dogs are dying from them. The FDA has complaints and reports from vets and pet owners alike.
I'm sure she'll be fine but if anyone has dealt with a dog that died from bad food or treats, what are the symptoms that I need to look for?
Diarrhea and vomiting is a normal occurrence for an upset GI for a dog but anything beyond that? Fever? shallow or rapid breathing? Is it preventable only if you go before hand? I heard they die of kidney failure probably because of the toxins in the treats.
One of the signs of kidney failure and problems is to drink and urinate a lot more and she hasn't been doing that so I'm glad.
If anyone has insight on this or words of encouragement about how your dog went through something like this and how you helped your dog recover, would like to hear!
She's 1 year old now but she looks and acts like she's 6 months. People ask me how old my puppy is all the time. She's a small 55 lbs and still has a baby face. I'm probably being paranoid but I just had to put my other dog down 2 weeks ago and I get worried.
I know the feeling all too well. I'm a nervous nelly too! Before you gave her the treat today, was her stool normal? Can you show me the brand and style of treat you purchased? Just to let you know there are those with sensitive tummys. One off schedule type treat will make their digestive system so upset.
I suggest keeping on the chicken meal and make sure she gets lots and lots of water.
My girl sometimes breathes fast and shallow when she is lying down napping...its just something they do.
When Sheba had bad poopy I gave her chicken and rice and she gobbled it up and her potty was really good the next day. Eventually changed over to grain free and things were a lot better for her.
Keep an eye on your girl as I am certain you always do and things will work out just fine. As always, see your vet if you have any feelings of uncertainty.
Oh, and be careful what you read sometimes on the internet. There are too many opinions and stories out there. Give her lots of love and ensure her that she's going to be fine! She'll kick it for sure! Sheba and I send our hugs and kisses too!:hug:
Thank you, yes her stool was well formed before the treat. I'll try to find the treat bag and post the info here.
It worries me the frequency that she goes to the bathroom. Seems like every 30 mins or sometimes 5 mins after she has the runs, she goes back to find another spot but nothing comes out. She's on a grain free diet too but i think im going to feed her very little chicken for the rest of the day and hopefully by tmw she will be good. She's still very happy to see people and running around chasing birds in the field.
Trader Joe's chicken jerky was made in China. they pulled it from the shelves. when it came back it was made in the USA. check your package
and call Trader Joe's and ask them where was the jerky sourced and made.
**** i threw the label away. basically it came in a plastic package with cardboard label that is stapled to the top. threw the cardboard part away. im going to go and get a refund and ask that they check on it cause it could get other dogs sick

Yeh probably had a reaction to something in the treat. Cruz got the runs when he got some antiflamitories and pain relievers from the vets. Dog trainer said good chance they had wheat gluten or whey or something in them to hold them together. A few days after he was off the meds, he went back to normal.
MADE in the USA does not mean the ingredients are Sourced in the USA. It would say both. A call or email to the company who manufactured it is the only way you would know. The only time they have to say MADE IN CHINA is if they are sourced AND packaged there. So Please call or go and to the store, write down the info and find out from the manufacturer. "Trader Joe's" store would not know these specifics, their buyer just orders them.

If your dog likes Chicken Jerky, you can make it yourself with fresh boneless, skinless chicken breasts! Just slice thin, put on a non stick cookie sheet sprayed with a little Pam, turn on oven to 200* and let them dry out for a few hours, turning over after about an hour! They store very well for quite some time in the frig! ;)
If you dog keeps urinating more frequently than she did before, which sounds like it is unusual for her, I'd get her tested for her sake and your piece of mind.
Hope this helps!
Thanks all, she's doing better. she never was lethargic or acting weird except the runs. Today they are still there but less frequent. Hopefully itll be cleared up by tmw
