So Penny was in for her last round of shots until next year, and over the past week or so both of her eyes have been very gunky and I had to wipe yellowish green goobers from both of her eyes multiple times a day. Her one eye looks like its drooping and swollen, so it was the first thing I brought up in our appointment. She told me she thinks its some type of conjunctivitis and gave me some ointment to put into both her eyes twice a day. They told me that if it doesn't clear in 7 days to come back that it could be something else... Has anyone else experienced this?

Onyx got it from my foster...it is highly contagious, so keep her away from other dogs until it clears.
Onyx had an ulcer in her eye from it/cleared quickly after I started the antibiotic drops.

Thanks Onyx... By the time I got home from the vet and got Penny settled into her kennel I had remembered that I forgot to ask them if she was allowed to still have her Puppy play dates that we do several times a week and when I called they had already closed.. Thanks for letting me know! I will contact her "friends parents" and let them know of our cancellation this week, dont want to get anyone else sick!

She probably got it from one of them, so don't let her take the blame. lol! Rescue/shelter dogs constantly seem to pass it around and around.....so if one was recently adopted, could have come from them.

None of the dogs we have playdates with have been adopted through a rescue or shelter... But she is in contact with A LOT of dogs... her 4 friends we see every week, the dogs at our SCH club, the dogs she has seen on our walks or at the pet stores.. so Im sure it could have come from anywhere... I just hope it clears up and is gone before we go into our training class on the 19th

It's arguable if conjunctivitis in infectious. Indeed, the name conjunctivitis is really just a description. There are many MANY causes. Most vets feel most cases are not infectious - two of my doctors at work were just arguing about this the other day. The one definitely feels some cases are infectious, as she feels she has seen dogs in the same household get it.

Normally it's a simple eye infection. Antibiotic ointment does well to clear it up. Occasionally it is a more severe situation, may even require a specialist. In cats, for example, the herpes virus can cause it and that is lifelong.

I would not be concerned unless it does not start to clear up within a few days

And as well, I WOULD stay away from other dogs until it clears up just in case

She may have caught something at the vet.

excreting mucous is a symptom of detox/elimination.

In TCM, the eyes are related to the liver...the liver is overwhelmed with detoxing everyday stuff, food by-products etc., as well the immune system is in a weakened state from the vaccines.

With an adult dog I would say Milk Thisle/Dandelion to help rebuild cells and flush toxins (liver toxicity is precurser to kidney problems down the road)...however, a pup I would just look at strengthening the immune system w/nutrition...a good source of highly digestable protein suppliment is SeaCure - can order online from Rockwell Nutrition.

Eyebright is an herb you can buy in tea form, brew a cup (bring to room temp) and use to gently wipe the eyes...it is also a detoxifier for the liver, but have no info (or time really to search) for dosing for ingestion in pup, so I would look at the seacure and use eyebright topically

Hi again... so I stopped using the ointment on Friday as I had called the vet to ask them if I should continue using it or not as she hadnt been getting the yellowish/green eye goobers since 3 days after I started the ointment, and they told me to stop using it... but this morning I woke up and she AGAIN has greenish eye gunk! I put more ointment in her eyes as the vet is closed on the weekends... but just wondering since I have quite a bit of the ointment left if I should just keep using it till its gone and see if it comes back again and then take her back into the vet if it doesnt go away, or if I should take her back in regardless?

You need to use the ointment at least 7 to 10 days. Or at least three days after you stop seeing the symptoms. Otherwise the strongest bacteria survive and you will have a worse case than you had in the first place.
