Default discharge from female?

java is around 9m old now - not fixed

there was a mucus like discharge in her crate this morning and i'd say a very "feminine dog" smell

she nearing a heat? we plan to get her fixed sometime after her first heat. this is all foreign to us, so please forgive if this is a stupid question!

I would say she is probably coming into her first heat.

Weren't you the one that asked about the female going off food? If she went off food and is having discharge with smell - either she has an infection or she is going in season. Is she cuddly and extra sweet? Is she swollen and licking the area?

Yes! She is back to eating like crazy once again shortly after.

She has been pretty cuddly and quite loud bark wise

I figure it maybe worth taking her to the vet anyway, we haven't been since she was a puppy.

When did dam and litter sisters go in season? Can help estimate. Sounds like she is going in - word of caution: vets sometimes give you goofy answers about this type of topic so take it with a grain of salt.

It is not a big deal - pick up some doggie diapers. If she is a clean girl that doesn't bleed much, she will clean herself enough and you will probably not have to worry too much - you might not even notice. Some females are really smelly, and discharge a lot - put her in the diapers when she is free roaming in the house. Take it off when she is in the crate. Watch her when she is outside and keep her on lead - perhaps carry a stick if you are in a residential area and have to worry about strays. She will only truly be interesting to males for a 3-5 day window at the middle of her cycle so you do not need to worry for 1 month - of course be VERY careful anyways as you don't know WHEN that window is. Only problem with car is that sometimes the stinky girls in an enclosed space is almost enough to make me pass out

My girlfriend and I adopted our first female GSD, a 3 year old who is currently going through menstruation. She is wearing the doggie diaper without any problems, but I am wondering how long the bleeding typically lasts. I noticed some redness to her urine in the snow a few weeks ago but we did not see any blood in the house until this Saturday when it really started, so we got her a doggie diaper.
