I hate shoving a pill down my dogs throat, though that's the way I've been doing it for years.
Most dogs I've had can find it in food, and then they have to want to eat to take it anyway. My new way is to have Lisl sit in front of me facing forward between my legs while kneeling around her. I gently open her mouth with her head all the way up and drop the pill into the back of her throat followed by 6 cc's of water from the syringe I had from the Panacur the Doc gave me a couple of weeks ago. This works great and she can't help but swallow with the water in the back of her throat. I gently hold her mouth closed and stroke her neck. She doesn't mind this at all, and she will always swallow the pill. No fuss, no spitting it out, etc. So lets hear the rest...

I give Joey his meds, vitamins in Pill Pockets. He scarfs them down.
After he was neutered, he was prescribed Metacam liquid for five days. I didn't want to squirt the liquid directly in his mouth, so I measured the dosage and poured the liquid into the Pill Pockets.

Mine don't find it in the food - they are used to getting fish oil and turmeric that way.
But when I have had to give a pill alone I did some obedience/treat, obedience/pill, obedience/treat - they never caught on. They thought it was a treat.

Gus eats anything around the pill and then spits it back out. Being 4'11" its really hard to force my dog to take a pill..

The easiest way I've found to give a pill is to just have a spoon full of something your dog likes immediately after the pill.
Open the dogs mouth, drop the pill, and immediately give the dog the spoon. Works every time. |

Peer pressure work best for us if they are suspicious. Every one (dogs) sits in front of me and gets a piece of deli meat, the pill hidden in the one who needs it. Then I have the next piece of deli meat ready in my hands for them to see. They immediately forget about the laced one and scarf it down to make room for the next piece. Never have to open the mouth of force them to do anything. This might not work if they don't want to eat tough.

I just pry his mouth open, place the pill on his tongue, and then hold him under the chin to keep his head up. He knows to swallow, its really cute because he'll swallow the pill and then open up to show me
then he gets his reward. Took us a while to work on it but did it when he was young (started with him allowing me to pry his mouth open) so now its just a regular thing.

I've been cramming meds down our older boys throat two times a day for the last 5 months. I'm definitely going to try the syringe method. Sounds like it could help tons.
