Default prostatitis and neutering

MY 9 year male old GSD had prostatitis. I never had him neutered do to I wanted to have some puppies. That never happened however my Vet is suggesting to do it now as it will lesson the possiblity of it re-occuring. However will not prevent it. MY concern is his age and I prefer not to put him under that type of stress. Has anyone experienced this or have had there GSD neutered at such a late age.

Neutered my 8.5 year old last year for enlarged prostate. The recovery was a little harder for an older dog. I would demand post surgical antibiotics becaues he developed a painful scrotal infection. The anesthesia was fine. We did bloodwork first. I think it is a fairly quick operation.

I did not feel I had many options; the dog was having horrible problems defecating and an ultrasound showed it to be very large and not apparently cancerous.

Thank you for the reply Jocoyn. I too feel like my options are limited. He was hospitalized for 2 days when he had the stint with the prostatitis. Then after 4 weeks of antibiotics. I do not want it to re-occur again however they cannot promise it will not happen with this procedure only that it will lesson the risk.
He is very high strung hence my concern with the stress factor. Just bringing him in for a normal visit where's him out. Last visit they tried to get a urnine sample and they could'nt. I am hoping they will let me stay with him until he is given the sediative to calm him down. Thanks again for the quick reply
