Need help with broken toe :/

So jax broke his toe maybe 2 weeks ago. He's had his foot wrapped for about a week and half of that. I just recently noticed that his good toes on that leg seemed to have a bit of swelling and he started to limp again. I have been re wrapping it and am 100% sure I did not wrap to tight. Upon closer inspection his toes are rubbing raw. I guess from the toes being together and rubbing they have lost the hair, look raw, and have caused some swelling. My first instinct is to remove the bandage and let the toes separate, but his toe is still healing. I'm thinking about just applying some neosporen with a q tip and just riding it out until I get the x rays saying his toe is okay to take the bandage off. Need some advice on what to do. Thanks!

Ask your vet about the swelling for sure

sponge some organic apple cider vinegar 50/50 mix with water to help kill bacteria - allow to dry(!) and put some cornstarch between the toes before wrapping, that will cut down on the friction

I had a similar experience the first time a dog had a broken toe and after that I left them alone-seems bandaging and splinting did more harm than good - just kept the dogs quiet (unghh easier said than done)

Def on the vet you can get a nasty staph infection. We wound up with something oozy after a bandage and wound up (at the vets advice) a 10 minute daily betadine soak, oral antibiotics and I covered it with a sock inside and covered the sock with a plastic bag for short outside trips.

I swear by white toddler socks in my medical kit! Some with toes in some with toes out. Vetwrap is good for holding stuff in place but does not breathe very well and let air in.

This was Grim after an injury that went to staph. (toes swollen/inflamed) It was pink one day and this the next! Took a few weeks of daily soaks to clear up. And there was no broken toe involved. For this we were given a pretty strong antibiotic.

in the people er, we would put gauze in between the toes and wrap with an "ace" wrap as it is a bit elastic and allows for swelling. neosporin won't hurt. keep an eye on the swelling, if foot continues to swell he will need to be seen.

I was really surprised in my case how quickly a little raw went to a full blown infection which is why I suggested a vet be consulted and posted a photo. The day before that ugly picture, I just noticed a little pink raw spot.

Perhaps they could even work with a photograph to see if he needed to go in.

wondering if you had tried some antibiotic ointment when you first noticed, also was there an oder when you first noticed the redness or when it looked like the photo ?

No...just suggesting things can go bad real fast-and to watch it like a hawk, and just call the vets office -the dog I had whose foot had been bandaged with a broken toe--HIS foot stunk, this one did not.

Get to work on it tonight - epsom salt soak in warm water w/splash of white vinegar if you have nothing else...neosporin (canada polysporin) after, but if you put that on you cannot use cornstarch, will just stick.

Do you have organic coconut oil, can use that too prior to neo and after soak

I can get 100% coconut oil easily. I will consult the vet this morning. From what I can tell it is just minor swelling and a bit of a stench from lack of air. I just put a cotton ball covered in Neosporin in between his toes and secured it with some wrap. I have a few things in mind that I want to do but wil talk to the vet later and see what they recommend. I will let you guys know the turn out.
