Pythiosis is IN CT :( a must read if you don't know what this is.
Pythiosis in Dogs
A "new" disease that I hadn't heard of that has affected a friends golden retriever puppy:( He is probably not going to make it. I wanted to put this out there for people to be aware of this potentially, life threatening illness:( |
i am in jersey, thanks for the info.

:( Jax loves swimming in ponds. If it's in CT, it won't be long getting to PA.

Doing some Googling and came across this from the PetMD website:

How sad, I've never heard of it before. I read about all the dogs who died - there were several shepherds, and so many of the dogs were young. Horrible. :(
|
Thanks for that. Its not in my state but its in 3 surrounding states..
|
Thanks for posting. It's apparently all over the South, but it's the first I've heard of it.

I really appreciate you finding this.
I know multiple dogs who died of "cancer" from working floodwaters in the SE US after hurricanes....I wonder....if this is what it was (it is called swamp cancer though it is not cancer) It is another thing on the list to continue to check and monitor for; apparently this can hit pets living a suburban life though more common in hunting dogs (obviously SAR dogs would fall into that bucket) |
Nancy, the girl told me another name for this is "swamp cancer".
When I was told about it, this dog is under a year old, had a mass on her, they found after the dog kept vomiting/diarhea, and couldn't get it under control..The mass was removed, but the dog didn't get better, so they did further testing and consulting (since there are supposedly no other cases of it here in CT) and came up positive for this. The dog lives in a suburban neighborhood, with a pond behind their house, since the dog has been in the pond, they are suspect of that pond:( Apparently, there is nothing more that can be done for this puppy, the mass is already growing back and will end up cutting off her airways:( When I read the website and they said GSD\'s were high on the list,,just WOW! My dog swims ALOT but I won\'t be letting her near any \'ponds\' that\'s for sure:( |
Another thing to worry about....ugh. Is it only picked up in "pond" water? I am thinking ahead to the summer. Stella loves water and I want to take her swimming. Lakes??? Rivers??? Are they ok? Is this fungus only in pond water or can it be in other stagnant water like puddles from the rain???
And if it is tropical....does it die out in the winter???? |
