Breeding a dog with hernia?
 

A female GSD was supposed to be bred with my male one but while i was checking the dog out i noticed she had hernia, it was on her belly button, it's umbilical i think.
I was talking to the owner and telling him that breeding this dog might cause the puppies to slip out and damage or even kill the dog.
He was convinced that surgery would repair this and she would be ok.
I don't wanna have a guilty conscience breeding this dog with mine so can this dog be bred and if not, will surgery help or repair the hernia while the dog carries the puppies.
I talked to a vet, he didn't see the dog but he said that 2 weeks after the mating she should be taken to the vet and get a surgery.
This sounded a bit strange to me and very risky so i know there are alot of experienced GSD owners here please post your opinions.

It depends on the individual umbilical hernia. If it is a big one and "open," yes there can be problems.

If it is a small one and closed, there shouldn't be a problem at all.

My friend said she saw a dog with a hernia as large as a good egg, that had a litter of puppies and no problems. My vet said that if I chose to breed Tori, I should have them fix the hernia around six months old -- same time as they would have recommended spaying her. I just never bred her.

It seems like a pretty easy repair though, they usually do it while spaying with no major issues.

And, they can surgically implant sperm, and I watched this procedure the other day, they make about a two inch incision pull out the uterine horns and use a needle to inject the sperm, then they sew everything up. So I suppose they could fix a hernia after she is pregnant.

I would go with whatever the vet said. I would let the bitch-owner make decisions about her bitch.

My father did most of the breeding and all that stuff, I'm starting to learn now I'm only 18 :D, and i wanted to post here to see some answers with experience so that I can talk to the owner and my dad, First time I've seen a situation like this it made me curious.
