Concerning worms/bowel movements
Starting yesterday, Zeus has had inconsistent bowel movements. His stools have been soft and also diarrhea with this jelly like mucus in it. Last week, I noticed his stool had small, rice like worms in it. Note, he has been wormed every month since he was a puppy but it hasn't rid of the worms. I am taking him to the vet Tuesday where I will discuss this further. Also, Thursday I started feeding Zeus Science Diet instead of Iams. Could this be a cause of his recent bm's?

I would see the vet, do a fecal, and consider a different food.

Definitely get off the junk food. Rice like worms are typically tape worms, so you will need to do a dewormer.

I just don't understand why the dewormer the vet has given me previously doesn't work. Anyways, Zeus is 7 months now and weighs around 65lbs. He is in excellent health and very playful. Which foods would you consider to be some of the better ones out there?

Sometimes the dosage on the de wormer doesn't seem to do the trick.
My female GSD had worms when she was 9 weeks old and the breeder had wormed her. I took her to the ER because she has liquid diarrhoea and they gave her Drontal at a 10kg (22lbs) dose. She weight probably about 5 kg (11lbs) at the time. that night there was a bunch of worms in her poop  She had another large dose of dewormer the next week - no more problems after that :) Also dogs can get constantly get reinfected with worms so the dewormer may have worked just fine but he's picked up more again. Ask the Vet about a feacal test to see what worms you're dealing with they may be able to give you a specific dewormer. The change of food probably has to do with him having loose poop as well. Have a look in the Diet/Nutrition section on here for some better kibble recommendations :) |
I agree with the others. And definitely get off that food!!! Try:

Just got back from the vet about an hour ago and it turns out that Zeus has tape worms after they did a fecal test. They put him on medication for the worms and also some other medicine for his diarrhea. Other than that, the doctor said he was in perfect condition and he weighs a solid 75lbs! Oh, and the reason he has that jelly like stuff in his poop is because Zeus has a habit of eating sticks so obviously it irritates his colon (should of guessed that ). With the dog food situation, I'm going to finish him with his bag of Iams and then I'm switching him over to Natural Balance. I never realized how much junk is actually in certain dog foods until I did research last night.
