Just got Zelda this week and she is almost 6 weeks. We got a 3 inch worm from her stool and immediately went and bought medicine but can't give it to her yet as she hasn't reached her 6 weeks just yet. Well tonight she vomited and it was like something out of a horror movie. The puddle was about 3 inches across and it had a whole bunch of worms in it and the whole bunch was alive and moving. Immediately gave her the medicine.
Advice? Vet is obvious I know but won't be able to go until Monday. Or is it more serious then we think? |

Where did she come from? We go her from someone who had a liter. Not a breeder just a normal family who had puppies. |

I am not sure. I get it online...but maybe a feed store.
Good question - what did you use for wormer? Does it go by weight?? Safeguard is another good one, but get the powder which is a packet of 3, sold at Petsmart and probably PetCo and feed stores. |

How sad. She's too young to be away from mom and her siblings. And a good breeder would have wormed her already. All of these back yard breeder stories break my heart.
I'm sure the wormer will work quickly. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using Petguide.com Free App |

I had a puppy puke up worms at 6 weeks. The vet would only deworm for one worm at a time because he was worried about to many dying off at once and causing a blockage. I would absolutely not screw around deworming her myself and take that chance. I still remember how concerned that vet was. I could not believe the amount and size of the worms that came out of her little body. Call your vet in the morning.

I wouldn't wait for Monday. Worms are normal in puppies, but that is a pretty serious infestation and you are probably dealing with a number of types. Much better to take the puppy in, than getting something off the internet, or at a feed store.
I use strongid, I get it from the vet and usually start worming at 3-4 weeks old and by the time they go home at 8 weeks, they have been wormed 3 times, one of them by the vet, twice by me. I continue worming them every 4 weeks thereafter until they are fully immunized.

How would one worm for "only one worm at a time"?
![]() Unless the dog had rounds and tapes. But even then, tapes don't come out in clumps like rounds do. And I agree...do it sooner than later. Just be sure to follow the dosing instructions to a T. (Strongid is Pyrantel Pamoate) Last edited by msvette2u; 01-04-2013 at 11:50 PM. |

I know that some have suggested I use panacur at some point besides just strongid.
I get nervous when pups have symptoms from a worm infestation. To me a pup with worms is no big deal, worm them, but if they are having symptoms, then the infestation is great enough to go up a level in severity, and I wouldn't be comfortable with a young puppy having vomiting from worms, I would want a vet on board.
