My beautiful 2yr old GSD is loosing soo much weight
Quickly let me explain, I love GSD's, I was bitten in the neck and in the face by one(my own as a teenager), my face is fine dont worry. Well I still love them and the one I own now is SO trained and friendly its sad to see him loosing weight till I can feel all his bones. He has the tail bone in the back, the neck bone and I feel all his ribs. He has been to the vet and weve payed upto 1000 dollars on check ups and they said that the urine and stool tests had no results. Were going to take him to a specialist and give him probiotics and hopefully find a remedy since I know many dogs may have had similar issues and overcame them. He has all the energy of when he was fine and we are limiting his food since that was advised. I hope anyone who can just tell me about their situations with their dogs, that wont hurt and i will post up pictures of when he was fine and healthy(6 months ago), and now. What blood work has been done? has a B12/Folate test been done (think called a TLI)....this would be looking for EPI....check out site epi4dogs (google) to find similar...sometimes the test will be normal as folate can mask a b12 defciency.
what do you feed? If you are going to give b/12 make sure it is methylcobalamin, not the cyano version (synthetic)...and should be w/folate... Also, provided tests show deficiency, if b12 isn't being utilized, this may be do to a lack of intrinsic factor w/o it b12 is not utilized....metagenics makes a b12 suppl. w/intrinsic factor....it's that or injections. you can also look into SeaCure...this is used in cases of wasting... Definitely have your vet test for EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency). It’s a condition in which the pancreas stops producing enough digestive enzymes to digest food normally and their system isn’t able to absorb the food’s nutrients, leading to weight lost and malnourishment. It’s a very common problem for German Shepherds and Collies. Besides the weight lost, the biggest sign is the very soft and runny stools. It’s as if everything he eats just goes right through him without being digested. My dog came down with EPI at about eight months old. We had to add pancreatic enzyme power to each of his meals and he quickly recovered.

Why are you limiting his food if he's losing weight?
 Ditto on the suggestion to test for EPI, it's unfortunately all too common in the breed, and certainly should be checked for and ruled out any time there's unexplained weight loss. Untreated it can be deadly, but it is very manageable, so the sooner you find out if that's what he has, the better. Here's a link: Overview - EPI * Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth) often goes hand in hand with EPI, so most people test for that at the same time. Make sure that your dog has fasted for at least 12 hours before the blood draw if you want accurate results. The TLI tests for EPI, the Cobalamin/Folate test is for SIBO. |
