Invest in an integrative vet (holistic DVM) and change diet from processed to natural, limit toxins (incl. immuno suppressents/steroids), this is a band-aide effect that will lead to further illness. A derm will run tests to find staph or some other - this can be treated from the inside out with what nature intended - real whole food, NOT cephalaxin and steroids, pesticides (heartworm/flea/tick), aluminum, mercury, formaldihyde (all in the adjuvants of vaccines), rendered fats (carcinogens sprayed on the food-cooked fats are toxic), processed meats devoid of natural enzymes and amino acids, high carb foods that spike insulin levels.
How come vets never blame the drugs they use and always blame the food
I am planning on seeing the vet listed from Momto2GSDs closest to me. I can switch his food again to give it a shot.. what you are saying makes a lot of sense. Is there anything you suggest as far as brands goes?
you guys are great thanks for all the suggestions.
Since he is allergic to grasses and trees, I"m not sure this will work as it did for my dog, but you could try feeding 1 tsp of local, unpasteurized honey. This worked for my girl's seasonal allergies.
AWESOME!!!!! I'm sure you won't be sorry! Had it not been for homeopathy and diet, our first GSD would have been dead at 2, but she lived until 12!!!! BTW, better to completely change vets (take records with you) than keep the current one and consult with the holistic. A whole bunch of posturing goes on between two different mind sets and you'd be caught in the middle of confusion!
If you'd like to feed your baby REAL honest to goodness HUMAN food b/c you cannot do the raw routine, please try The Honest Kitchen brands purchased at doggy boutiques (not chains) or on line. All Natural Dog Food | Dehydrated Raw Dog Food | Like Homemade Pet Food It is the ONLY company in the USA that the FDA Legally allows the words "Human Grade" to be used on their packaging and advertising. This is dehydrated pure food. 10# will cost around $83 but re-hydrates with water to make approx 35 pounds. Well worth the $2.40 per pound! Rotate with Non-Grain varieties, Zeal, Embark, and Force. They meet the AAFCO nutrient profiles. They other things that would be helpful for him would be Organic, Virgin Coconut Oil (NO hexane, NO gmo's) purchase at a local health food store and Neptune Krill Oil on line. Be aware that all Krill is not the same and quality in a product counts. I use DaVinci Nepturne Krill Oil as one of my rotations Neptune Krill Oil 60 Softgels by DaVinci Labs Start out slow with the krill and work up to 1 per day of this brand. Feel free to pm me if you'd like more info.
PS: Please note the warnings that Gator mentioned.
Good luck and keep us posted!
Temaril P is a pretty sketchy drug for an unknown itchy skin problem (however you cannot just stop it)
What side effects may be seen when taking Temaril-P?
Side effects are usually dose dependent. If side effects occur, contact your veterinarian, who may decrease the dosage or frequency of administration. Side effects may include sedation, exposed third eyelid, muscle tremors, weakness, blood disorders, and an increase in drinking, eating, and urinating. Your pet may have more "accidents" and need to go outside or use the litter box more often. Less common side effects include increased appetite, weight gain, panting, diarrhea, vomiting, and behavior changes.
Hank had been given Temaril-P for itching and immediately had diarrhea. I think I used 3 pills before throwing them away, and they cost $60. Same vet also put him on Simplicef for well over $100 a bottle. (I do not go to that vet anymore, they must get kickbacks from Pfizer, or else they must buy the drugs and mark them up 500 percent.)
I have had good results from fish oil and just started coconut oil this week. Hoping for good results. He does not have bad allergies but he does sometimes itch frequently and gets occasional hot spots.
