She can go a day or two without eating. In fact, it will sometimes help the digestive tract to fast a dog 24 hours, and then start with a bland diet.

I know Colitis, it is an old friend when I was feeding Canidae. It seems every other bag of dog food caused another bout of colitis in one of my girls in particular. The first time you see those red pools of bloody poo it makes you drop everything, rush to the ER and pay whatever it takes for bloodwork and the whole nine yards.

After a while though, you start checking other vital statistics before running to the vet. You hae a protocol that says if the dog is otherwise acting normal, fast the dog for 24 hours, leaving water available, and then start small amounts of boiled chicken and rice.

After getting off the dog food I was on though, my bouts of colitis went away.

I may be very wrong, but from what I understand about HGE, this dog would be dead if that is what it was. I have not had ANY experience with it though. Only a friend of mine from work had a dog that had this, I had a colitis issue, and asked the vet about HGE, and at that time he told me that it will kill a dog within 24 hours without treatment. I think Jean probably is better to listen to on this as she has such a dog.

Make sure it's barely salty to taste though, dilute it.
And do it every 20 min.
IF her diarrhea picks back up from the every 20 min. administration, then take her to ER vet.
She ought to be on an IV or getting sub-cu fluids, ideally.

Her stomach and gut should rest...

Was bloodwork something that I should have thought of at the vet? Or were they suppose to offer it?

Ava just jumped onto bed with me and licked my face right before I headed to the kitchen.

Well, yeah, our vets usually would start w/bloodwork, a stool sample and x-rays...

Yeah, better safe than sorry.

She had classic symptoms of passing blood, clots, white mucous (GI lining) in the blood, and then starting to vomit. I had JUST re-read HGE info the night before when making up a packet for my foster who was being adopted and when I saw it knew I needed to call the vet. It was a Sunday, and thankfully the most experienced vet was on call and he basically diagnosed it over the phone, had me come in immediately and did an exam, blood work - confirmed it - gave her a shot of Cerenia (I think) and started her on IV at rapid rate and antibiotics (I believe IV as well - amoxi). Checked her blood semi-frequently. She only had to stay until the next day when her blood work was normal.

I have seen pictures of other dogs' BM/blood and it looked like a pool of liquid, no clots, but they had HGE as well.

I hope you/your girl are okay. I would call the ER vet.

**Correct me if I'm wrong here...isn't pavo considered a "type" of HGE?
I was looking it up once and thought I saw that it's a non-specific type of diarrhea that involves blood...kind of an umbrella term? Or is it an illness of it's own?

I don't know! Huh.

Parvo is a virus with a known cause, HGE doesn't have a known cause, so I am not sure.

Checking in on Ava this morning - wherever you take her blood work needs to be done. Good luck!

Reading all the posts to me it sounds like she should be at the vet's getting IV fluids...as well as getting blood drawn.

Taking her into my vet at 9:15 this morning who I believe, will be putting her on an IV drip and keeping her at the hospital.

Ava ate a fistful of watery rice and beef this morning but her last stool is a light shade of pink. Like a whitish pink. Still no interest in water despite syringing the diluted broth/sugar water mix every hour.

Will request and push for bloodwork.

I'll update as we progress...thanks for the support. Been soooooo helpful.
