Large lump - Page 3

Now the opposite side of her face is swollen- in the same spot as the other side. Is this usual?

I almost forgot. When I piked her up they gave me a clear plastic bag with a small blood soaked envelope in it. I happened to reach in my pocket tonight while lining my girl scouts up at our float for the parade. They were all so excited to see the dog's teeth....

Don't think so. It is worth a call to the vet. I wish they had done x-rays.

What kind of condition were those teeth? Any decay bad enough to cause the abscess? Otherwise could she have damaged them clamping down on something hard that might effect both sides?

They looked pretty good to me, especially considering she is about 13 years old! We only brush weekly so I guess we need to be better about that. She is not a biter or a chewer and NEVER has been. Off to take pictures

The big tooth was cut in half so I tried to get a photo of the inside in the first shot

It does look like there is some decay and calculus. I had my wife look at them, she is NOT a dentist, she is a hygienist (humans). The way she explained it to me, there are basically two causes of lesions (abscess). Decay and damage to the tooth/root structure. It could be your girl is experiencing the same problem on both sides. An x-ray would show this.

Call to the vet this morning. He was already in surgery so he just called me back. They want to see her back this evening anytime after 5. The conversation icked me out and I am not easily icked. I told him the lump on the removal side remained the same size and a new, smaller one had developed symetrically on the other side. He told me they had "poked" the area many times to drain it but had not gone overboard as he worried about "poking an eye"- ick ick ick. He then threw out "you always say ah, lump carnissal abscess and remove the tooth but could be a tumor...you just never know with cancer". Ugh- why the C word here? The gum on the other side looks inflamed.....

Xray not very helpful. He gave us pain meds and anti inflammatories. He said if it is still swollen by Thursday morning he wants her back. His plan would be to use sedation to better position for xray. He may at that point but her under again and try to open the abscess on the main side and then pull teeth/drain on the other side as well. He told me we can hope the abscess will rupture between now and then- maybe through the lip. I am going to try to hot compress the heck out of her.

Don't even start thinking "c" word. It sounds to me like the open and drain didn't work and the infection/funk is still trapped. I hope you can get lucky with the hot compress.
