Raw bone - excellent for mental and physical stimulation as well health properties and clean teeth.

It is not human's that impart the ideology of bones on dogs...humans do that with drugs however - dogs eat bones always have and always should - RAW

Many dogs become ill as well from the marrow in some bones.
You can certainly give a weight bearing bone for 1/2 an hour or so and take it away when the meat is gone. My butcher leaves some meat on it for Kyleigh and she loves them. Would I leave her with it for 3 hours? No ...

A dog can also break their teeth chewing on deer antler's ... my friend's boxer did it ... does that mean I tell everyone on here not to give their dog's antlers? No. And, I do give them to Kyleigh.

And many dogs don't become ill from the marrow in bones ...

Flagyl®
(metronidazole) Tablets
To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of Flagyl (metronidazole) and other antibacterial drugs, Flagyl (metronidazole) should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria.

Side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
  • numbness or tingling in your hands or feet;
  • white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips;
  • pain or burning when you urinate;
  • diarrhea that is watery or bloody;
  • vision problems, pain behind your eyes;
  • trouble concentrating, slurred speech, mood or behavior changes,...
Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: liver problems, nervous system disorders (e.g., seizures), blood disorders, Crohn's disease.

IMO - the dog had a heavy stomach from undigested bone and didn't want to eat. This aggrevated the digestive tract - the body responds to this by amping up the means to facilitate removal. Vomiting and diarrhea are natural processes.

Important however to know if there is any bone lodged especially from cooked bones re: x-rays. But if it passes - then no harm done and lesson learned

The drug is overkill as this is an acute problem, not ongooing - rest the gut for 24 hrs and feed an easily digested food like chicken and rice.

Further to add to this, instead of simply looking at this as overindulgence - which is possible, however when you factor in that dogs only release enzymes when they eat, and fat being the hardest to digest, the symptom would be diarrhea - the link would be a deficiency in lipase - the organ that excretes lipase is the pancreass...so in essence dogs with a "sensitive tummy" as it is so refered by vets - are infact struggling with a weak organ system. Addressing the root of the problem should be the focus. Not to say that any dog can simply eat marrow bones if they get lipase - it would have to be avoided, but changing the diet to assist the body as a whole to repair and regulate the function of digestion is the first step. 60-80% of the immune system starts in the gut and what you put in it.

The dog has a weak digestive tract - this includes several organs - gallbladder, liver, pancreas - the pancreas is also part of the endocrine system - hyprthalamus, adrenals, thyroid...
