That's what I was thinking too. Has there been any problems in the past?

Absolutely no excuse to do something like this, but for someone to go out of their way to intentionally kill a neighbors dog, something must be going on here. The average sane person doesn't just wake up one morning and decide to poison their neighbors dogs.

Oh goodness. Elaine, I hope you know that I've stood up for you in the past but please understand that it's not ok for someone to poison a dog even if the dog barks incessantly at them and is a nuisance. There are far better ways of dealing with this type of situation than killing an innocent life. Discussing ways to amend the problem, being open about it, being patient and understanding, staying away from the property...These are all possibilities. OP does have a responsibility in all of it too...

To the OP. Do you know someone who holds a grudge against your dogs? Have they spoken in the past to you about it?

It must be annoying to have to check the yard every time they go outside :c. I agree, you should let animal control know.

The bar seems to have lowered for what passes as 'average' and 'sane' these days. In my last neighborhood, somebody put out tins of tuna with antifreeze to get rid of the cats: some were feral but many were people's pets with access to the outdoors. A friend of mine had her cat killed this way, and she even found the tin, but nothing was ever done. It broke her heart, and she ended up moving. Some people really need some "consequences" given to them.

Antifreeze kills with not much ingested at all. It doesn't take 5 tablespoons to cause a problem, 5 tablespoons can kill a big dog.
We had a gorgeous well loved GSD come into the clinic very sick, small seizures, head tilting and making a horrible "keening" sound. We had to tranquilize her, then drew blood and found antifreeze crystals in her blood. They lived next door to where their new house was being built, the dog and kids were at the new house and one of the workers had a truck that was leaking antifreeze. She only got a couple of licks of the antifreeze from where the truck had been parked. Not much at all. We ended up euthanizing her because she was in horrible pain, crying and her kidneys had already shut down. Her best boy was sitting with her when we euthanized her.
Don't count on a certain amount of antifreeze not being a problem, ANY antifreeze ingestion will cause major problems and can cause death. The treatment of grain alcohol IV should be started immediately as soon as you realize your pet got antifreeze.

Agreed. I couldn't believe it when the vet told me that. One lick is too much for me to not do everything I can. I lucked out, it was just water from the hose.

Never had a complaint because my dogs do not bark unless someone is near my property. Kids have gone by and told them to shut up, and I never leave them outside unless I am with them. There have been a few who should not have been near my property that have yelled at the dogs and I told them if they didn't want barked at to go another way. The area near my front fence has no neighbors, it is a private owned field that has underground utilities and cannot have any structures built on it, it is used by some people as a shortcut. The only homes are to my immediate right, they are low income apts seperated by my chain link fence plus the wood privacy fence, and my dogs do not bark at any noise they make over there. I live at the end of a dead end roadway..

If telling kids to stay away from my property makes enemies, then yes I do have them.

Karen, how is your dog doing? Any suspicious symptoms? Hope all is well.

Wow, I just noticed that today is your birthday! I'm sorry your birthday had such a lousy start. I hope the rest of your day goes much better.

I completely baffled as to why anyone would condone poisoning an animal. That is horrendous.

OP - Glad your dogs are ok. I wouldn't let them out until I checked my yard and I would call the police. Who knows if it was a neighbor or someone getting their sick kicks. I would also talk to your neighbors and "warn" them about the incident. That should accomplish two things...1) If they are innocent of it, then they can keep their animals safe. 2) If they aren't innocent of it, they know that you know.

Intentionally poisoning another person's pet/livestock is a criminal offense. I would have reported it to the police, even if they did not come out to take a statement, at least you would have had it on record should anything happen in the future.

My father in law took issue with his neighbor's dog a few years ago, and put out rat poison laced bacon grease. The dog got sick and died. He was confronted and admitted to it, and charges were dropped after he agreed to pay the vet bills, but he ended up moving after the incident. I think his neighbors were entirely too easy on him, I think he should have gone to jail.

Did you keep any of the treats? I would save them and call the police and give it to them. They might not be able to do anything, but it can't hurt. And if this is just a random sick person trying to get his jollies off hurting animals, others in your area may be at risk and not as vigilant as you. They may need to be warned.
