Pet owners want ban on jerky treats - Local News - Cleveland, OH | NBC News

The FDA hasn't been able to figure it out after five years of testing and a visit to China. The government inspected five Chinese plants, but won't say which brands are made at those plants.

The FDA found falsified documents at one plant. The government said they were related to an ingredient in the jerky pet treats. As a result, the Chinese authority seized products at that firm and suspended exports of its products.

The FDA also found equipment issues at other plants, that were later fixed.

The fifth inspection report was not released.

The FDA tried to take samples back to the United States for testing, but the Chinese government wouldn't allow it.

If pet owners would start checking the source of ingredients and stop buying the treats that would be just as effective. AND even moreso, if stores would refuse to stock it that would send the message loud and clear.

I don't buy them and I look at the products I do buy to make sure they are made in the USA with USA ingredients.

I do too. And I make some the treats. Going to try Turkey jerky when the meat comes in.

I was getting treats at PetSmart last weekend and was talking to the Blue Buffalo rep. She said all their treats are sourced and made in the USA.

I just got a Drs Foster & Smith catalog, I had to get a refill on Apache's eye drops so of course I had to pick out something as a treat..I picked some stuff and only one had "Made in the USA" stamped on the picture. So I asked about that and she said well some of our stuff is made in other countries like Italy. I said oh but then China can ship the ingedients to Italy and make them there, she said "oh" I said yeah its really tricky out there.

Even the jerky company sites say they get their chicken from china, but they have an independant or their own lab run tests...the companies most complained about are the ones saying they are 100% safe. So if they find a bad batch from their own test would they admit it? or just discard it?

need to check labels carefully. i can go to wal-mart and fnd that the treats are from china. i then run up the road to tractor supply, and find the same treats, same company and same packaging but "made in the usa". gatorbytes is very correct stating "its tricky out there"!

"made" in the USA isn't what you want to look for. You want to know the "source". There are very few treats out there that note the "source". I"m ready to start my own business from local sources! It's getting ridiculous that we can't buy anything and feel safe about it.

i am out of the treats we use, but the labeling "sourced" all ingredients from the states, but it seems with some of the recent human food recalls,
how safe is anything for our dogs. i was using peanut butter to give doxy to my airedale only to find the peanut butter was on a recall list.
