After running hard, Hans won't drink water, but he loves a cup of ice. Been having second thoughts about letting him eat something so cold right after being worked.
Is this not a good idea, when he is hot and panting? I have found conflicting info over the net. |

Personally, I wouldn't give a LOT of ice...but a few should be fine. There are some that have said giving ice right after exercise will cause the stomach muscles to seize and therefore cause bloat. FWIW, I spoke to my trainer about this and he dismissed my concerns. I will have to dig around and find some solid proof one way or another. Perhaps ask the next couple of vets I see.

So about a cup is OK? I will see the vet on Tuesday, but wanted to hear what you guys think. My parents were always after me not to drink cold water right after sports. |

I don't give ice water and I don't usually give any water right away if the dog was REALLY working hard. At flyball I generally wait a few minutes (often walk the dog around the parking lot as a "cool down") and then give water.

Sunflowers: I don't see why not. I personally don't give ice very often after a workout, but on training days, we will frequently let the dogs that get along run loose and we tip the cooler with ice over for them to have fun. They all go nuts eating ice. We haven't had any issues - pups, young adults and mature dogs all seem to do fine.
I am with Lies though - I think you should wait a couple mins before giving water after a strenuous workout. I don't let them gorge on water either. My female was a kennel dog before she came to me - she had a tendency to gorge that I had to break. |

If she's really panting hard, I only give Kyleigh one or two ice cubes ... she mainly sucks on them.
Once she's "calmed down" i give her access to water

Ok, thank you.
We were doing flirt pole today. I usually walk him back inside and he goes and flops down, then in about 5 minutes I give him a cup of ice. Otherwise he won't drink water. He never was much of a water drinker, most likely because of his raw diet. |
