Puppy with Severe Dysplasia
What would you do? GSD is 7 months old, 62 pounds. Diagonsed with severe hip dysplasia. Recommended treatment is bilateral femoral head osteotomy (FHO), possible triple pelvic osteotomy (TPO). Thx!

That's super tough. Have you notified the breeder?

Crappy situation. If a surgery is recommended and possible then that may be the only root for the dog to have a successful treatment. If not then the dogs quality of life is not looking too good and should be turned over to someones care who can manage it.

My puppy was diagnosed with severe bilateral hip dysplasia at 10 months old. I have been told by two specialists that he needs a THR - total hip replacement (hopefully only on the one side). He will be having the surgery in the new year as I have to build some muscle mass on his rear first.

Good luck.

I would go with the FHO, my rescued girl had it when she was 10 months old. Best decision I ever made for her! At 10 years old, she is still going strong. :)

Breeder contract specifies replacement dog from next litter. I don't want another dog from this pairing. Too risky. She reports to have never had dysplasia in any litters in 15 year breeding history. Pedigree for 5 generations for sire and dam looks great on paper. Low ZW scores, OFA good, A Normal. All the certs are there. Breeder has not yet offered refund. Meanwhile, seeking evals and recs from several orthopedists.

GSDBestK9-Was your dog's FHO bilateral? What physical limitations or changes did you obesrve post-surgery?

dbrk9 11-15-2012 01:06 AM

What were the signs? Was your puppy sore behind or were you just getting routine hip xrays?

DaytonGirl66 11-15-2012 10:58 AM

dbrk9 - puppy's gait was unusual, not just worrysome hip sway side to side, but knees together and kicking out of left leg (worst of the two hips). Very wobbly walk. Throwing leg out to side when sitting - much more extreme than lazy puppy sit. Leaning against wall, etc for support when sitting. Very thin from waist to hind quarters/little muscular development in hind end - not using rear legs much, so muscle isn't developing well. Low appetite - presumably from pain. Won't walk far on a leash - lays down. Started bunny-hopping rear legs when running. Episodic lameness - limping left leg, then right leg. Evidence of pain - snapping at us when we pet lower back, hind quarters; whimpering when laying down, standing up. Intial signs observed at 4 mos of age, progressively worsening, so we had non-anesthesia X-rays completed.
