Riley is 12.5 and it seems that arthritis is bothering him. After a lot of reluctance I finally started him on Carprofen. After 4 tablets over 4 days ( below prescribed dosage) today he had blood and mucus in his stool. I will stop, of course.
Any recommendations regarding stuff I can to to speed up the healing of the intestines? Any recommendations for pain management? Ok, I posted this accidentally in the wrong section and cannot delete, Help! Last edited by RebelGSD; 10-21-2012 at 03:00 PM. |

I think Slippery Elm might help heal his inside. It will at least coat it to prevent further irritation.
Have you tried cold laser therapy instead of medication? My friends Lab has ED and a torn ACL and with the laser he is now pain free.

I can't help with healing the intestines, but I have some suggestions for pain management.
There is a different class of pain killers that is not NSAID but instead works differently -- Gabipentin is one example in the class that my vet says is very, very safe compared to NSAIDs. You lose the anti-inflammatory benefits of the carprofen, but you won't get the damage to the digestive system. It can make them sleepy (esp. at first), so we give it at night (once a day is all that's needed). For the arthritis, I can't say enough good things about Adequan. It dramatically improved the quality of life for my 10 year old guy whose hips were bothering him. He's gone from a slow, dawdling mosey on walks, always lagging behind, to a fast trot and sometimes a full jog--and we faded away the NSAIDs completely and still see him feeling this good. I honestly think it's a miracle-cure for arthritic dogs. It doesn't work in all dogs, but the ones it helps seem to get dramatic benefits. You'll know within about three weeks whether the loading dose is doing what it's supposed to do -- you'll either see dramatic improvement or you won't. I feel like it turned the clock back several years for my guy. |

Stop giving the carprofen, feed a bland diet for a few days, and he should be fine.
Adequan, laser therapy, and low impact exercise are your best bets for pain control.

Thanks for the advice and thanks for moving it into the health section.
I hope he will heal - I would not have believed that 4 tablets can cause this kind of a mess. I will probably start with adequan. I raised the question of gabapentin with the vet, he had no experience with it and did not want to prescribe. |

Rebel, I've been giving Rudy both Zeel and Traumeel pills. I think they're working well. I read a study that said Zeel is as effective as rimadyl after thirty days of use, without the side effects.
I've been taking Traumeel myself for some tendonitis and the relief comes quickly. Definitely use milk thistle to coat the stomach.

No, I buy them at the organic market near my house. There are quite a bit of online stores that have it, as well.
I bet Whole Foods sells both pills. I give Rudy three of each, twice a day. ETA: It's a lot cheaper online, even with the shipping.
