Default Maybe a dumb question.

I was told by my grandfather while he watched me play fetch with my Shepherd that making him run for a ball will give him bad hips. Isnt bad hips genetic or am I crazy? Exercising my dog cannot possibly be bad for him right? Thanks for any help!

I wouldn't say it's bad for him. Just want to keep an eye on him and make sure he isn't pushing to far. Just like running you want to work up to it. How old is your pup?

These are supposed to be working, military, protection, police, etc., dogs. I think a healthy GSD can handle a game of fetch unless they already had bad hips to begin with.

How old is he, what kind of surface is he running on, and for how long every day?

He is almost 3. Is running something that can give them bad hips or is it genetic plus running that just aggravates it?

He is almost 3. Running on grass and is healthy as can be. Just wanted clarification that hip problems are genetics and not caused by a maybe half hour game of fetch.

Has he shown any pain yet? Do you have any reason to think he might have HD?

You are missing the point of my question. He is in great shape and healthy as can be. Can running alone give a dog hip dysplasia or is it purely genetic!?!?!

HD is genetic... that's why the good breeders and informed puppy buyers stress the importance of generations of hip and elbow testing/certifications. Didn't you think there's some reasoning behind that?

If you have a dog with HD already or a very young dog that's still growing, running on hard surfaces or high impact exercising can aggravate or make the joints worse. This is why people say not to run their young dogs or HD dog on concrete for long.

Grandpa, for the most part, is wrong, but he didn't completely whiff.

Thank you. Exactly the answer I was looking for. :-)
