I use the rimadyl sparingly. We were given a bottle when he was first diagnosed and then another after his surgery. I just opened the second bottle last week, and its still pretty full. I only give it to him when he seems to be hurting, and I only give a half tab. I will still look into the Medicam as well, though. He's been in really great spirits today and playing A LOT! I went ahead and scheduled him for this Thursday. I will post an update as soon as he's out of surgery! Hopefully, this is the last surgery he will ever need!

Lakl, Your boy is handsome! I went thru the exact same thing with my golden pup. At 4 months she had both her hips done d/t sever HD, she had the tpo procedure at 3 weeks apart. The tpo has to be done when they are very young before the bones fuse, so timing was critical. Our girl never had any muscle in her back end, she had quite a skinny butt It sounds like your boy is in good hands, good luck to you and him! You are a great mom!!

just wanted to add something about the metacam that lauri mentioned..

I have used it, worked great for my senior girl who was quite arthritic,,I ended up going with the human form (your vet should give you a scrip), called MELOXICALM.
It was sooooooo much cheaper! I got atleast three months worth for like 10.00 at walmart,,with the meloxicalm, it only comes in 7.5 mgs and Sami would get 1/2 per day (they are tiny pills and she weighed in at around 75lbs, you need very little in dosage compared to the doggie form)

so a three month supply would last me six months..

Something to think about it and cost effective,,I've also used previcox worked well, but it's rather costly.

When one was on rimadyl, I did liver/kidney function tests at first every 3 mths since he had no problems, I went every 6 months, Kodi was on that for gosh, 4 years or so, DAILY, and no problems,,each dog is different tho

I did some research because Grim is on Metacam and two issues with melaxicam were that the inactive ingredients are different and the human dose is the only form associated with fatalities in dogs (I am guessing probably smaller dogs and dose too big...do not have the details)

The vet told me that and I got online and confirmed. We did blood panels, before, 2 weeks after, and now it will be every 6 months. He has spondylosis and the drug does make a difference in his comfort level.

The dog dose really is expensive though. I use the liquid so I can meter it down to the lowest effective dose.

nancy, yeah I started with the liquid and was going thru a bottle every month and half..The human form worked really well for my girl, she was probably on it for a couple years . I think the problem with the human form is the dosage..We had to convert the dog form dosage to the human form , the pills only come in a couple of mg sizes , and yes for small dogs I imagine it would be a pain to do.

In honor of his 1st birthday, I put together this little video last night of my pup and his first year of life. I think the song and video expresses the way I feel about this little guy, everything we've been through, and why I just can't give up on him yet...

Happy Birthday Baby Boy!

well that vid just made my make up run...

what a lovely tribute, he was the cutest little fuzzball and now the most gorgeous of boys.

It clearly shows how HAPPY he is despite the pain he's endured. Your a wonderful owner and I hope the next surgery will give him even more of a pain free life.

Freestep, I believe the easy way out Lauri was referring to was to put him down.

I give Lakl alot of credit for trying to do all that she can do for achilles, some people wouldn't which is sad.
