Default Need some advice on Aloe vera gel.

Over the past few days Nero has developed a nasty rash on his tummy. And I know it could be a number of things that may have caused it. I am certain it is not his food, as he has had the same diet pretty much his whole life.

I have heard that you can apply Aloe vera gel to the rashy area to help sooth it. I have bought some aloe vera gel today and I am a little worried whether or not to put it on him.

It says on the tube that it is 99% bioactive Aloe vera gel. Oh and it is organic. Here are the other ingredients:- Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, glycerine, carbomer, sodium, hydroxide, preservatives(less than 0.1%) benzyl alcohol, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone.

It also says it contains NO colourings, perfumes, parabens or animal derivatives (lol suitable for vegans)

I am just a bit worried it may harm Nero if I apply it to him and he licks it off, so was wondering if it is safe to use or not? Thanks in advance!

I would try it on myself first just because of the benzyl alcohol I wouldn't want it to sting really bad on a rash. Of course it is hard to try it on yourself if you don't have a small scrap or anything to test on

Also what does the rash look like is it a lot of bumps(pimple like) or is the skin thickening or darkening? Do you think it was something he was laying on? Now that the skin is compromised keep an eye out for a secondary infection. If it was a just a small area I might give it a few days with some home ointments but if it is really big I would head to the vet.

Look for Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera gel at Walmart. It is 100% Aloe Vera.

Someone I knew briefly had a dog with a rash so we put some aloe on it and it was the kind with the alcohol in it-I didn't realize it at the time. When we applied the Aloe the dog screamed in pain. The alcohol made the rash burn much like it would us with a scratch. Lesson learned and that product went in the trash.
