Hi,
I have a 12 year old neutered male German Shepherd. He ate a sock before Christmas and had to have bowel surgery. He seemed to recover pretty well from it but developed "adhesions" in his small intestine so had to have a second surgery where they removed part of the colon to correct the problem. They said he would have diarrhea for a few weeks, and they weren't kidding! He normally eats Stella & Chewys raw food but I fed him the Hills prescription diet they sent him home with for the first few days. Yesterday I was mixing it with some of his regular food and today is his first day back on the regular diet 100%. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this type of surgery and if they've been successful at controlling the diarrhea. They gave me tylan powder and it seemed to work at first, he actually had a solid bowel movement the other day but now the past 2 days its been back to liquid. I've also given him a couple of immodium ad capsules but its not helping. The watery diarrhea is difficult to manage and I am having a **** of a time keeping him clean. Thanks! |

I have an adult male GSD who was diagnosed as having SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) and is on Tylan every day. He started on Tylan in the first few days of June and has taken it every day since then. When I tried to take him off, he began to relapse with diarrhea again. His initial dose was 1/4 teaspoon twice daily and, after three months, I tapered him to 1/8 teaspoon twice daily for six weeks and now he is on just 1/8 teaspoon once daily.
Because the Tylan is so very bitter, I hide it in empty gelatin capsules that I purchase at a drug store and fill myself. He won't eat it any other way and, once it is in the capsules, I hide it in a meatball of canned food and he gulps it down. For us, Tylan has been a charm. Some other forum members are able to give it to their dogs in things like Pill Pockets or have other ways of hiding the powder.

Don't use immodium. It can easily kill a dog, and especially if there's a sensitivity to it (like the one to ivermectin!)
Also if it's bacterial overgrowth (sibo) you need the body to rid itself of it. We currently have a Pomeranian mix senior on Tylan for ulcerative colitis and she's doing great. She's a very picky eater though so I inject her when she misses more than one meal laced with the stuff. Injections hurt but if a dog can't or won't eat, they work like a miracle.

Shadow has diarrhea often, she just has a sensitive gut and a bully stick or some table scraps will throw her off. I used pumpkin, but she doesnt like the flavor of it.
We found a natural product at our raw dog food store. Its called Perfect form byt the company called The Honest kitchen. It's a herbal suppliment you add to the food. Only a teaspoon or so; Shadow doesnt seem to mind the taste of it. Works within 24 - 48 hours!! www.thehonestkitchen.com is thier website.

Chance has IBD and the combo of 500mg sulfasalazine, 2.5 mg pred every other day and 1/2 tsp tylan 2x a day is working very well for him. Take him back to the vet, liquid stools can dehydrate a dog very quickly. May need to stay on prescription food longer. Good luck.
