When we rescued Bentley at 4 months, his foster indicated that he was diagnosed with panosteitis and was just finishing out his treatment on Rimadyl. 6 months went by before he had another 'flare-up', they tested him for Lyme disease but was negative, he was prescribed rimadyl and was back to his normal exuberant self within a matter of days. End of December brought on the similar signs of limping that got gradually worse. Due to the holidays, they were okay with prescribing more Rimadyl. Again, he was fine within days.
Well, once again, he's limping. He definitely did not injure himself. I'm not sure if flare-ups like this keep coming back so frequently - but he has grown tremendously over the last 7.5 months that we've had him. He's gone from 40 lbs to over 100 lbs!! He'll be a year old we believe next month. The vet on call told me we could go ahead and prescribe Rimadyl again but if it comes back, it may be time to do an x-ray and check for growth abnormalities b/c she said he's too old to be having pano. I thought pano usually inflicts male GSDS up to about 14-18 months? Also, wondering if anyone had any theories about what else this could be so we can explore all avenues at our next appointment.any info anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! |

Sorry I am not much help, when my boy had pano I just gave him a low dose coated aspirin and restricted his exercising. I am sure someone will come along more knowledgdable and have some answers for you. Hope that your boy is just having growing pains.

I know Pano can last up until about 12 months of age. My male Otto had Pano it went from leg to leg lasting for weeks at at a time. Basically puppy growing pains. It's common in large breed dogs. Sounds like you have a big boy! What food is he on?

Thanks! Yeah, he's more of a BUS than a Bentley. LOL He's on Kirkland Lamb, Rice & Vegetable. He seem to have had issues with Wellness Large Breed and with Iams, not sure why but Kirkland seems to be one his digestive system agrees with.

my boy had pano on and off between 4 months and 8 months
old. i had blood work done and x-rays when he first limped. when the pano flared up i kept his walks very short, no running and crate time. i use to massage his legs with a towel with ice in it. sometimes i would massage his legs without the towel and ice. my traditional Vet prescribed Deramaxx and my holistic Vet prescribed Rostux (sp).

We also kept walks very short, play time was calm and quiet.. no running around and bouncing off walls, more crate time to keep her still, and a nice comfy bed/blanket for her lay on and be comfy since it is very painful. Messaging the legs like DoggieDad said, also helped Zira out and let her move a little easier. We had her on Rimadyl as well. Worked just fine as long as we kept her quiet during the time she was on it. Hope your pup gets through that stage soon! Pano is no fun for anyone!

I am wondering if my dog has the same. She has had the whole very tired/sore getting up and sitting down. I took her to the vet and we did X-rays. She seemed to have inflamed joints. The vet hasn't brought up pano yet, but she is trying to rule out tick disease.
I will follow your thread to see if there are any specifics in helping their pain. My girl is only 1 and 70 lbs. Good luck, I know its hard to watch them in pain. |

Several years ago, we had a female that had Pano off and on until almost 2yrs of age. *Beautiful, normal hips & elbows*.
SO Pano is not *age restricted, nor sex restricted* although it tends to be more prevalent in males. Have your dog's hips & elbows checked......as HD can also disguise itself as a case of Pano....and vice verse.
