I will be taking Ilda in for a laparoscopic spay procedure**(see below) in the next couple of weeks. The clinic which performs this procedure will, for a minimal additional fee, also do a preventative stomach tack (Laparoscopic gastropexy) at the same time.
I'm told this doesn't prevent the painful condition from occuring but greatly reduces the threat of the stomach twisting during a bloat episode, thereby decreasing the chance of death. Since the surgery is laproscopic it's far less invasive but I'm wondering if there are any potential negatives to stomach tacking in a healthy dog? Any advice, information would really be appreciated. (**btw for those not aware laparoscopic spays are becoming widely available. They are a little bit more expensive but IMO and based on my research worth it. My regular vet recommends them even though he's not set up to perform them himself *yet*. So for those needing to get their dogs spayed check around your area you may have a clinic which is performing the laparascopic spays!)

A lot of people have their GSD's stomachs tacked. Aside from the potential negatives that arise from having any surgery done, I'm not aware of any negatives specific to gastropexy. My dog will be having a laparoscopic gastropexy this summer along with his neuter. If you do a search in the Health issues section for "gastropexy" you'll find a lot of good threads.

Thanks and yup, I should have done a search...but I thought laparoscopic spay/stomach tacking was fairly new...
Thanks again for the input and I'll search for the other threads too! ![]() (side note...I am SO excited that there is a well respected vet clinic near me where Ilda can have a laparoscopic spay it sounds like it's so much easier for the girlies this way YEAH! )Quote:

The laparoscopic gastropexy is fairly new, but regular gastropexy isn't and in researching that you'll still get a good idea if that's something you want to do with your dog or no. I had a thread specific about laparoscopy in this section about a month ago and there was some good discussion. I'll see if I can find it. . . .

This one? Cost for a gastropexy?
I'll read through it all now but as to the cost you mention in the OP ...wow!

I ended up getting a quote from Texas A&M veterinary teaching hospital for $450.
