Default Lepto

So I have some questions about the Lepto vaccine, because the results of my research have been mixed. My vet recommended we get it because we live on te border of a 3000 acre Wildlife park/mountain. It's wooded, I see deer a lot, and Pat and I love to hike the trails and plan to bring Viking with us. When I did research though, I saw sites saying the vaccine had "horrible" side effects, but then I saw websites that said people who don't grab it and live in wooded areas are stupid. I asked how many cases my vet sees a year and she said 2-3. Only one dog she knows of has died from lepto because of liver failure.

So I'm asking what your opinions are. I know you guys aren't a vet, but many of you do a lot of research and I'm lost and unsure of what resources to use right now.

I'm on the fence, because frankly I don't like vac'ing my dogs at all BUT I also live in a wildlife infested area and hike alot.

I gave Jynx (my mdr1 dog) ONE lepto vac about 5 years ago, that's it.. she was fine.

Masi has had ONE two years ago, she was fine.

IF you decide to do it, your initial shot is a series of 'two',,broken up by a few weeks.
DON'T do any other vacs "with" the lepto or within a couple month time frame, that's my paranoia speaking, but I do not, if I have to, load up on anymore than ONE vac at a time

My vet said they may no longer be giving the Lepto vaccine in the 5 way because of the allergic reactions to it. Jax had it as a puppy and her leg swelled up. My friend's corgi's throat and face swelled up. She almost lost him.

I think you really need to weigh the chances of getting Lepto to the reactions of the vaccine. What are the instances of Lepto in your area? How often are you coming across standing water that could be contaminated with Lepto?

I'm afraid of allergic reactions, but we do live in Seattle, which is a very rainy and mildly temperate place.

The term wildlife infested made me chuckle (My parents live in OL and I'm up in the northwest corner, so I know what you mean!!). Given the amount of tick-born diseases around here, I decided to go with the vaccine. I too did it only once and as a single vaccination, and Echo never had any problems.

your parents are in OL? How cool is that! I probably know them if they come into the fishmarket , I work there) And yes, if your parents are down my end of town, or actually most areas of town, I have coyotes, racoons, deer, opposum, squirrels , skunks, fisher cats, bears occasionally, I am not looking forward to encountering a cougar tho OH and we had a BIG RAM on the loose right across the street from me a few weeks ago

sorry to go OT

It may be a risk if you live in a place where it is common. Personally I don't, I get minimal vaccines for Bianca.
My Golden had a reaction to Lepto and she started limping really badly after the vaccination. She was ok once we had her get a benadryl shot but I never did Lepto again after that. She also developed a bony lump in the same leg later which I have wondered if could have been related.

All the Seattle vets do it and won't even ask.
Discuss pros and cons but make your vet justify giving it. If they can't, skip it.
Don't give bordetella. They push that too.

Why not for Bordetella? My Fritz hasn't gotten it, and am wondering why it is that I shouldn't?
