I order the Duralactin Equine Joint Plus from KV Vet supply in their equine division. The dose is just one teaspoon twice daily and the horse bucket lasts for many months with just one dog.

Incidentally, I also started my GSD on Dasuquin with MSM last month in addition to the Duralactin. He is doing beautifully with this support.

I've got the fish oil on board (was giving that for coat/skin/general health) prior to diagnosis. Also 1000 mg of Ester C for general health. I'm looking at upping the Ester C.

Speaking of the fish oil two types/brands that have been recommended and have very good reviews are Bear Treats Salmon oil (I know a lot of people use Grizzley brand but people who have switched are reporting better results with Bear Treats). The other fish oil which was recommended to me by our own Robin Huerta is Sardine/Anchovy oil. You can get that on Doggie Food.com or Amazon.

Going to add starting today Dasuquin with MSM.

Looking to add: Duralactin

I've heard good things about vitamin E in some natural support articles. I like to see research though (if possible) as to it's effectiveness.

If anyone has info on any of these supplements wrt arthritis/HD/ortho please share. If I can find anything on vitamin E I'll post it up here.

The other tid-bit I've been reading is that after time dogs (and peoples) systems become (for lack of a better word at the moment) immune to the same supplement over and over. In some cases it's reported that it's a good idea to rotate supplements. Like switching from salmon oil to another omega oil source for example. Any comments or thoughts on that line of thinking?

Thanks to all for the input!

I've never heard about the bodies becoming immune to the supplements but thinking about it, it does make sense... Hmm I'll have to look more into that.

I use Dasuquin also and I LOVE it! Before Dasuquin I was using Zukes glucosamine/chondroiton treats and Tazer loved those! Oh my they were his favorite goodies in the whole wide world. They have 300 mg of glucosamine per treat so once he started getting worse, we started going through the treats really fast and it didn't seem like they were working as well so I opted to try something different and started him on Dasuquin. He doesn't like the Dasuquin chews though has anyone else had this problem? I just mix it up in a little bit of canned food and he eats it just fine then.

There are is so much great advice on here! Thanks everyone!

Luzmytazer...

You can get Dasuquin in soft chew treat form (find them on amazon), they are more pricey that way though. A lot of people are finding the dogs don't take the tablet form as a treat and have better luck with the soft chews.

I smear a bit of peanut butter on the unappetizing things and the puppers scarf them right up!

Also, in the January photo contest, your photo entry is that pic your Tazer? If so... Wowzers he's gorgeous!

Yes that's my handsome boy! THANK YOU!
I do get him the soft chews and he still doesn't eat them, he's a picky eater I guess. I get them from Amazon too It's half the price on Amazon than if I were to get them from my vet..

Thank goodness for amazon!

I got my dasuquin yesterday. I could tell Ilda wasn't keen on the tablets. She sniffed and mouthed them before eating them reluctantly. On her dose today I did the peanut butter trick and she ate them more readily.

I also have a good article to post here. It explains in more detail the benefits various supplements provide for dogs with dysplasia/arthritis

What about giving the pills along with food? I do that and my dogs have no problem eating it with breakfast/dinner. I found this also helps with avoiding stomach upset and GI issues.

My boy, gobbles up anything with his food. Always worth a try with him!

'Princess and the pea' dog nibbles around the bits she finds distasteful.

I just smear a wee bit of peanut butter on the item and suddenly it's a delicacy.

There's some discussion about the benefits of vitamin C, Ester-C more particularily in helping arthritis through healing and production of cartilage.

I'm running into two schools of thought, one that it's not beneficial and may even be deterimental, two that it is especially Ester-C.

Oh boy just when I think I've got it figured out!

Two links, both written by veterinarians.

Here's a link supporting the use of vitamin C

Arthrix.com - Information

Link stating the vitamin C does not help:

(scroll down, about midway for the vitamin C info, interesting article overall tho....)
