Hello- I first saw my rescue at the PSPCA- he had HD in both hips- a local shelter picked him up and paid for a THR- I volunteered to foster him through rehab- tough b/c he is so young >2yo- we did all the right stuff- went for monthly radiographs for 3 months- Dr released him said he was good to go- 6 months go by he strats to limp on the "repaired" leg- went back for radiographs and he needs to have the implant taken out- the rod part that is in his femur is pulling loose- so we are looking a an FHO (not that there is much left to take out) muscle is really atrophied- he is tall- 80lbs- so now we need to open again (coffin cut the bone)and take rod and cement out of femur- poor guy had only had maybe 3 months of pain free- anyone else have to go through the removal of implant? risky business Im told- but no other choices
thoughts?? thank Kim |

Wow, that is really awful that the implant came loose. I'm sorry, I have no advice for you, but am hoping that the second surgery helps. Did the surgeon have any theories as to why the implant came loose? I'm kind of surprised that he was re;eased to normal activity after three months. With our THR dog, it was a full year before she was back to completely unrestricted activity.

Thanks so much for replying
How did your friend make out with the process? good reaction? long recovery? is this the best it can be? as to why it failed -the Dr said there may be an infection or that his body is just rejecting the cement- therfore attacking it -chipping away b/c it is foreign he is on antibiotics and metacam- Dr say will ned to be on for 3 to 4 weeks before even thinking about surgery- sounds like infection to me I am hoping the rescue will pick up part of the tab- I figured he would have problems in the future- 6-8 yrs from now but not 6 mo in! |
