So Kaos was in for full blood panels about 2 weeks ago. At that time we changed his med routine to help control his arthritis. The vet wanted to check for tick disease since he has had an quick increase in mobility problems as well as a couple unexplained nose bleeds. All results came in, tested negative for tick...she didn't see any red flags in his blood work.
She called today for a 2 week check in after starting his new pain meds. After discussing his noticable yet minimal improvement, she mentioned that the nose bleeds and sudden onset really bother her and she would like to start a course of Doxycycline to see if it is possible the tick test was wrong. Does anyone see a problem with this?

Too late to edit, but wanted to add....the other reason a false negative concerns her is my 10 yr old son was out playing on the edge of our property in August and came in with 4 deer ticks on him. Kaos' sudden increase in arthritis symptoms started in September. He has been kept current on tick preventative....but she said so many are becoming ineffective

I would do it if it was my dog.
I've used it extensively in foster dogs as it's good for secondary bacterial infections after kennel cough. Never had issues with it.

I did read some....I guess false negatives are not uncommon.

So we are starting off on a 2 week course and if he shows improvement we will do 2-4 more weeks. Thank you for your opinion. Makes me feel better, I didn't see a downside, but wondered what others thought.

One of my GSDs gets an upset tummy from Doxy... with him I give Pepcid AC about an hour before I give him the Doxy (with food) and that seemed to help.
If you haven't seen an improvement in a week or so, I would probably discontinue the Doxy (talk to your vet, of course). If it is a TBD, they usually respond to treatment quickly.

Kaos seems to have an iron stomach, but I will keep an eye on it.

Doxy should be fine and I think it is a good idea. Will not hurt a thing.

I also agree with your vet,,recommended dosage is 5mgs per body weight twice a day. I do atleast a 2 month dosage. (mine are always testing positive for anaplasmosis /a tick disease)
