Hi everyone,
I have just taken my boy Max to the vet after he woke me at 2.30am this morning screaming in pain, he was fine all day yesterday . Moniterd him today and all seemed well, got to lunch time and he was screaming and suddenly lame on his back leg, my first reaction was to burst into tears (bad mum) and then comfort him, carried him to car (all 34kgs) and rushed to the vet who promptly saw him as he was once again sreaming in pain and very lame by this point. After the consultation my vet has told me that Max is suffering from Panosteitis, he has only seen one case of it the last one being 7 years ago and said it is rare, but only seen in young male gsd's. He has put him on painkillers and wants to see him again in a week to monitor, he did day that max would grow out of it, possibly upto 18months (he is 9 Months now). Does any one else have epxperience of this? Any help advice greatfuly recieved. Thanks all. Maxs very worried mummy

Its not rare at all. Its actually quite common, and not just in GSDs or males. Its growing pains. Its not fun for the dog, but its not anything to really worry about...
Leerburg | Panosteitis or PANO Its just growing pains. |

Wow, thanks everyone for your super quick replies! Its nice to hear it from those in the know, hence me posting on here as soon as i got back. I feed him on Wainwrights Dry and wet. Could it be what i am feeding him them? Also he is Big Boned, straight backed. Glad to know its not rare, obviously it is in Southern England then!!!.
Also how would i go about reducing his calcium and protien? Change of diet. The vets put him on Carprieve Pain Killers.

Does pano only happens in very young dogs? Zeus had it as a pup too.

[Canine panosteitis: an idiopathic b... [Schweiz Arch Tierheilkd. 2002] - PubMed - NCBI "Panosteitis, an idiopathic bone disease of young dogs, was investigated in the light of a new, empirically based hypothesis governing its pathogenesis. Extensive clinical observations suggest a close relationship between the incidence of this disease and the commercialization of various protein-rich, high-calorie dog foods. The theory of an "osseous compartment syndrome" provides a hypothetical pathogenesis, which corroborates this findings. An excessive accumulation of protein causes intraosseous edema due to its osmotic effects....." |
