Ok, well my almost 2 year old Gsd has had an aching mouth(left side) and two days ago his left eye started to swell. So after a day I took him to the vet. They were only trying to get me to get him neutered. So I'm looking for advice and looking to see if anyone has had this happento any of their dogs, and if so what you did to fix the problem. Thanks in advance. And if you need more info just let me know.

Did the vet have any idea what is causing it?
Is the eye still swollen? Did you look at his teeth? Personally I'd probably be looking for a new vet if I took Dante in with an mouth and eye issue and all they wanted to talk about was neutering him

I have seen a dog that developed an infection due to a rotting tooth. An abscess developed which caused the one side of her face to become swollen. Treated with antibiotics until the infection was under control then had the tooth removed. Your dog is pretty young so might not be a rotting tooth but an infection would be my first thought especially with the aching mouth. Did your vet check your dogs mouth?
Find another vet! If it is an infection and the face is swelling I would want to get the dog on antibiotics right away. Last edited by Clyde; 12-27-2011 at 02:23 PM. |

Same thoughts here - a sore mouth and swollen side of the face that are the same is very indicative of an abscess in the gum or root of the tooth. Have you looked in your dog's mouth? Another possibility is a foreign body such as a stick lodged in the roof of the mouth. A friend of mine had a Beagle that got a twig lodged in the uppper palate while out on a rabbit run and this dog had the same symptoms as yours.
Find a vet that will actually examine your dog's mouth, please.

For sure new vet. If I you go in to fix a problem and they're looking at the complete wrong end of the dog you've got a problem.

Yeah I took him to a new vet today. they gave him shots for allergies and said to bring him back tomorrow if its still swollen and they'd under anesthesia to check for abcess in his mouth. I definantly like this vet more.
