My 6 month old pup just started developing really bad dandruff on her back closest to her tail. It's winter time here so I'm sure that's the reason. We just started using an oatmeal shampoo and conditioner we got from Wal-Mart and I've started giving her a tablespoon of olive oil in her breakfast and dinner. She gets 2 1000 miligram fish oil caplets a day as well. I'm going to also invest in a humidifier. We just started all of this for a week now but I'd like to know what types of things other people do to prevent this. What types of shampoos? Also, am I giving her the correct amount of fish oil and olive oil? I guess I should also consult my vet.

I give my GSD, Max, a zinc supplement/caplet with each meal. He gets 30 mg. twice daily/with each meal and his dandruff improved tremendously. He had it in the same area - along his back and at the base of his tail.

Personally I would be careful not to over-wash the dog. Their skin secrets natural oils and balances pH. Every time you wash, that gets out of whack. When I'm preparing a dog for a show if I'm going to bathe I do it days before the show b/c they almost always get a bit flaky right after a bath.

You should be also supplementing vitamin E with the fish oil. Fish oil needs vitamin E to process through the body and if you're not supplementing with it, it'll take it from other sources already stored in the body and can cause a deficiency in some dogs.
Some of it may be from the dog changing into it's adult coat through. |

when my boy was younger that happened. It is dietary (he was on a prescription diet at the time for his tummy). An increase in Omegas was all he needed.
