I am so upset. Jenny started limping on her rear leg and avoiding using it. This seems to come and go but she's very slow getting up. She seems normal at times but has been lethargic and not eating as much as usual. I took her to the vet on Monday and just by physical exam couldn't find anything. Everything I have read about Pano seems to fit her symptoms. So I'm taking her back tomorrow for X-rays. She woke up this morning crying out but by the afternoon she was better. It's crazy. I feel so sorry for her. She's only 11 mos. old. Please send some positive vibes my way. After having lost Carleigh to cancer last Dec., I am probably more upset than I should be.

Don't worry. This is a self-limiting problem and will most likely get better on its own. My boy Whiskey had pano and limped for a couple of months. It is hard watching them suffer and favor a leg, but it will get better. I know what it's like... I lost a dog to cancer earlier this year and I was SUPER paranoid for a few months afterwards. I would get overly upset over every little scrape and scratch. But time will hopefully heal all things. Don't worry! It'll get better. Just keep her off her feet, limit movement and you can try medication if it gets really bad.

My good friend's 7 month old male was just diagnosed with Pano on Thursday of last week. She was devastated since he was so uncomfortable. After a trip to the vet and some Prednisone and Tramdaol, he is much more comfortable today and the owner is doing better too. His limping has eased and he is eating again. My friend also reports that his joints are no longer swollen.

I wouldn't give Pred for a bout of pano. There are other ways to reduce inflammation without the risks/side effects.
Vitamin C(natural human grade) will reduce inflammation and shorten a bout. Also look at what you are feeding, is it high in calcium/phosphorus? n2gsds....there are many threads on Pano, you can do a search and read, read, read! It is too common with this breed. |

qbchottu, thanks for the info and I am so sorry to hear that you too lost a dog to cancer. You are so right about worrying about every little scrape, bump and lump!

Onyx'girl, thanks for the info. I did a search but only 1 thread came up. I am currently feeding Jenny Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy Food. I'll check the bag for those ingredients. I have had 4 other shepherds and never an experience with pano. I hate to see her in pain. Will just any vit C be ok?

My first GSD had pano REALLY bad as a puppy. He would not eat for anyone but me, he would hardly move, I found that he got too stiff if I did not make him get up and move around a little bit every now and then. I felt awful watching him in so much pain, but it does eventually get better!!! Darn these fast growing dogs!

Megan, thanks for telling me about your experience. It helps to know that it gets better and isn't something that is permanent!
