Unhappy GSD -Displaced/distended intestine in chest cavity

I wonder has anyone had experience with a GSD whose small intestine for some reason has displaced and traveled up into the chest cavity where her stomach is? My girl is Cassie; she just turned 7. She is in hospital now 2nd day They took a couple of sets of xrays and the intestine has not dropped. Prior to Wed she was completely healthy. She spent a long day outside and could have ingested something toxic. Wed night to Thursday no stop throw up and bms. Friday she seemed better and took some food of venison and rice. She has an Ultrasound scheduled for today to rule out tumor pushing it up or a partial obstruction that they cant see. We have already dropped 2,000 dollars on care and expect a surgery to cost 4-5,000 $ Its not about money but no one has given me hope that they can solve this issue and my girl will be back home soon. Its amazing how anxious this process is making me. Please send any information good or bad. Thanks friends. Kim

I don't know about dogs but I did have a cat years ago whose intestines and stomach were up in the chest cavity. There was not really anything we could do and the vets were really baffled about why. She was fine though. They just left her as is and she lived her life fairly normal (for a cat with feline leukemia).

Sorry I can't offer any advice, but I will keep your girl Cassie in my prayers. Welcome to the forum, there are a lot of knowledgeable people on here that I am sure can offer some good advice.

Question Monday GSD with Distended/dilodged intestine

Hi GSD friends~ Cassie in hospital since Saturday At 2 PM on Sat they gave her Barium beads to observe their track. As of yesterday at 5 Pm they had still not entered her colon. Doctors will take an ultrasound today to assess what else is going on...She is stable still on IV and antibiotics, & the intestine is still "floating" in her chest cavity where the stomach is... Does anyone else think she could have done this to herself from all the vomiting and retching on last Wed? Vets are not really giving us a definitive tx plan yet other than to say "we dont want to cut her abdomen open if we dont have to." My mind is racing with all sorts of bad thoughts I am feeling less strong as we go on here. Please send your positive thoughts our way to Western New York...

Thanks for your support... I have never had to deal with having one of my pets hospitalized before. I am anxious to see her and talk to the attending Vet. Thanks again!

Welcome - sorry for the reason - to the board from yet another WNYer. I have heard excellent things about Orchard Park! They may also be able to consult with Cornell - they may have seen this since they have such a high volume of unusual cases from all over.

Is this what it is? Diaphragmatic Hernia in Dogs
