Default Demodectic Mange

A couple of months ago Sinister had Demodex Mange. It cost me over $600 to treat it through the Vet.

Now it's back again!

I absolutely cannot afford to spend that much money again at this time. I could spend it next month after I get my bonus but I do not want to wait that long.

Is there a cheaper way to fix this problem?

That seems a bit much. Could you just call them and ask for the meds without a visit? My vet gave me doxy because of excessive tick bites once without coming in.

How did you treat it the first time?

Ike just got over a bout of mange. I got Goodwinol from the vet to apply on the spot but since the underlying cause is a weak immune system, I also supplemented his diet with the following: Vit B, 2000mg Vit C, Vit E, 4000mg fish oil/per day. I have no basis to back this up but I think the supplements did more good than the ointment ...

I have to call the Vet and ask what she gave us last time. I had to put a liquid on his eyes twice a day and give him an oral injection every morning.

I had to give him 1 1/2 milimeters of oral Ivermectin every morning.

The eye liquid was Neopolydex.

If a dog is under 2 years old they should be able to get over mange on their own. It may take as long as 2 months to resolve. I went through it twice in the first year I had Rafi (who was a stray) and it has not reoccured. The Ivermectin is much more dangerous than the mange itself.

My info is in that original post. I bathed him with NEEM shampoo and used NEEM spray on the spots and also boosted Rafi's immune system with Ester C and an immune boosting supplement made by Honest Kitchen as well as a Colostrum supplement. The NEEM definitely got rid of the itching and when he got mange the second time it resolved in 2 weeks. His treatment cost me about $50.

This is actually what my Vet told me about localized demodex. He said if I wanted to do a cream I could but in his opinion there wasn't much point. He said not to worry unless it got worse and became generalized.

I also supplemented like Jason, and it went away.

Holy crap- $600?? Uschi had it when she was about 4 mos old just after a bad case of puppy vaginitis and her immune system was compromised. Our vet HATES the bath and thinks it has lots of dangers, so we used the oral liquid ivermectin every day for 90 days. He mixed it with something that looked like Geritol to boost her system. It worked really well and we saw improvements within weeks- by the end of the 90 days all her fur was back. She just had one spot on her ankle. I can't remember the exact cost but it was about $90 for the 90 day supply. He said that some dogs have to be treated more than once but she didn't. Now I'm mad that you spent that much!
