Default Do you stop flea & tick/heartworm for winter?

Last winter I stopped using heartworm and flea and tick medicine on Jerzey, I just figured it wasn't needed. Plus, I don't like the idea of her taking poisons like that all year (or wearing them, whatever.) So, now that Jerzey is back in VA where it is cold enough to kill all of the little bugs should I do what I did last year? I don't actually know when she last got either of them, although I can only assume it was within the last month since my ex's landlord is very serious about Jerz not getting fleas.

I kind of planned to just not give her any again until spring. Those that live on the east coast, what do you think? What do you do?

Thanks in advance.

I used to but won't this winter. My hairdresser's dog got Lyme's disease in February (in northern Pennsylvania) when we had a winter thaw. If you want to take her off of the advantage/frontline product types, how about the garlic that some use?

I do actually have bug-off garlic but my ex never upped her dosage to more than one pill when her size requires 3 or 4 daily. I gave her a pill and a half today, so I will see later how her system handles it. She also really needs more fish oil because her coat is a little dry but I'll have to up that after I get the garlic up, don't want to shock her system.

Let me know how it works. I was floored when Chrissy's dog got Lyme's in February last year. And she lives in town! I let Jax run in a hay field behind our house!

We have to use it year round here...the weather is too unpredictable. It can go from snow one day to 80 the next (seriously, this happened last year!). If it gets anywhere in the 50s the mosquitos are out and we don't get much colder than that in the winter....I just don't chance it.

i give heartworm/ flea all year around. but i ran out of vectra3D (tick/ flea like frontline) this month and had decided not to give it over the winter. HOWEVER, yesterday we went hiking and found a tick on my husband, so I have to go buy more today... so I think she is going to get that year round, just to be safe. Ticks are SO BAD by me, though. I have found over 100 on Riley after a hike once (Memorial Day weekend- peak tick week)

Heartworm: Yes year round
Flea/Tick: no, not in the winter months. Although, I'm going to give that Bug Off Garlic a try.

I give both year round.

We usually see more ticks in the fall and warmer winter days than we do in the summer. We live in the woods and there are ticks everywhere! We find an average of 1 or 2 ticks per day crawling on one of the 3 dogs or 2 cats that go outside. They usually don't attach due to the Frontline.

Our vet requires a blood test for Heartworm if we miss or are even late on one dose of Interceptor.
